The Muskegon Conservation Club is home to many fishermen and women, so this new page is being added to the web site to pass along information relevant to fishing and the health of the Muskegon River and the Great Lakes watershed. We welcome member fishing stories, pictures, and links to web sites that address fishing concerns. One of the biggest concerns currently is the Asian Carp, an invasive species that is working its way up the Mississippi River, the Illinois River, and the Chicago Shipping Canal into Lake Michigan. As most of you know, Michigan's attorney general, Mike Cox, filed a court petition to close the Canal until an effective solution is found to prevent Asian Carp from entering Lake Michigan. His suit against the State of Illinois and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has been joined by several other states and the Canadian province of Ontario. Feel free to give your support to the cause and learn more about it using the following link: http://www.stopasiancarp.com/ Another invasive species is the Grass Carp, an example of which is found in a picture below, submitted by MCC Board member Jim Wiseman. This 58.4#, 47.25" fish was caught in the warm water near the Cobb power plant by Richard Snell. He called it in to the DNR through Angler Archer in North Muskegon, thinking it was an Asian Carp, but the DNR identified it as a Grass Carp, an invasive species for possession of which there is reportedly a $10,000 fine. |
