This started as an ugly Tiesco solid-body. Sure, they're classic, and a lot of bands are using them to get a unique sound, but I had to start somewhere. I did some serious cutting of the lower horn to make it pleasing to my eye, then a little more shaping to balance it out. I created a serious contour where the strumming/picking arm crosses the body for comfort, and to blend in with the strange contour that was already there. Finally I started routing out major sections of the body, leaving about 1/4" of the back. I did this mainly to test the stereo pickup ideas and the placement of the pickups. I was going to need to be able to slide the pickups from the neck to the bridge position to listen to the tone and decide what I liked better. I created a temporary plexi pickguard with a sliding section to hold the pickups and slots so I could slide back and forth without having to disassemble between positionings. I need to make another slider for the other set of pickups I have for the project, so I can test them too. Then, I want to rout out a little more wood to give it a nice full-bodied "chambered" sound. Finally, I have some Mahogany that I planed down to 1/8" that I need to glue to the top after drilling the control holes, cutting the pickup holes, and the "f" hole. I have a very special "f" hole design planned - but you'll have to wait till the finished project is unveiled. |
