Pictures to be posted... I've been wanting a full size Jazz box, but couldn't afford a Guild X series, but I could afford one of these. I've played it once so far, the day I got it I brought it to practice and played for three hours. Not a good idea until you have a chance to set it up for yourself, but I made it. A couple things right off that took me by surprise (I'm not complaining - just stating) was the weight and the lack-of-sustain/dullness of the strings. The rosewood, non-compensated bridge is 1/8" wide where the strings pass over. I already have an ebony compensated bridge ordered, so I'm going to experiment with this one. I will take a Dremel to it and create a "knife-edge", compensating for the "B" string a little as I go - to see if I get a bit better sustain. It has a nice woody tone, that I'm sure has something to do with the wood bridge, so testing with a Tune-O-Matic will happen, but I don't want to loose the woody jazz box sound. I will post results, and maybe sound files. A couple of years ago, people were giving these things away on eBay, but now they are really appreciating - so I jumped in before the prices started topping $600. $550 is pretty common right now, so I was surprised to be the winning bidder at $450! (even though it had a gig bag, but no hard case). So I guess my Guild F-4CE was a great bargain several years ago at $450 with a case. |
