Music & Civil Rights in America
Music & Human Rights Internationally
| "You can blow out a candle, but you can't blow out a fire. Once the flame begins to catch, the wind will blow it higher. - from "Biko" by Peter Gabriel Music: It's Everywhere in Society Music is an important part of our culture. We use it for everything from celebrating birthdays, graduations, and weddings to just having a good time by listening, dancing, and making our own music. In some cultures, music is also used for more solemn events such as funeral ceremonies.
The Political Power of Music Music evokes emotion and has also been used politically to bring attention to important political issues. During the "Civil Rights" era in America, music was an important force to unite people. Years later, songs were still written about some Civil Rights leaders. Through song, musicians have also brought attention to human rights abuses internationally. Check out the links on your left for more information about how music has helped people maintain and fight for their rights. |
