Lacrosse 101

The East JR Panthers Lacrosse Association (formerly the Murphy Lacrosse Program) was established in the Spring of 2009, as the feeder system for Plano East Lacrosse. Since then, we have evolved into the premiere youth lacrosse club east of Hwy 75. Based in Murphy, the East JR Panthers serves youth from Murphy, East Plano, Parker, Sachse, Wylie, Richardson and North Garland.  This program offers lacrosse instruction for all skill levels, within a framework focused on developing exceptional lacrosse players, who demonstrate positive attitude, good sportsmanship, and respect for others, while having fun. Our ultimate mission is to develop outstanding moral character through the sport of Lacrosse. We aim to accomplish that by getting lacrosse sticks into the hands of as many boys and girls in the 1st through 8th grades as possible.

Lacrosse offers the speed and power of football and hockey, and the endurance, agility and strategy of soccer and basketball. Lacrosse is played on a field which measures 110 yards by 60 yards, with 10 players on the field per team. Anyone can play lacrosse--the big or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse. Lacrosse is both exciting to play and thrilling to watch.

With a history that spans centuries, Lacrosse is the oldest known sport in North America. Rooted in Native American religion, lacrosse was often played to resolve conflicts, heal the sick, and develop strong, virile men. To Native Americans, lacrosse is still referred to as "The Creator's Game."

Today, Lacrosse has evolved into one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Youth participation in the sport has grown over 138% since 2001 to nearly 300,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 228,000 high school players. Lacrosse is also the fastest-growing sport over the last six years at the NCAA level with 557 college teams in 2009.

From 2009 to 2010, the East JR Panthers experienced a growth of 188%, from 45 to 85 players and 4 teams. Our week long summer camp attracted 52 players (one as far as Edmond, OK). We also offer free Stick Clinics two times a year to attract new players to the sport.

East JR Panthers is a non-profit organization is operated by a combination of experienced coaches, professionals, and parents who share a passion and commitment to provide a premier youth lacrosse program, where decisions are guided by the principle of “What’s best for our kids?”
