How does the access to the Darkroom work?
Once
you have paid your membership fee AND have gone through a MANDATORY
session (at the beginning of the darkroom workshops) to learn how to
properly use our facilities, you may present your MUPS
card to the SSMU desk (first floor) who will lend you the key. If you
want to get in while the SSMU help desk is closed (after 5pm and on
weekends), you must sign out the weekend key from the MUPS office (See below). What about weekend access to the Darkroom? Weekend access is given to members only who have gone through the MANDATORY workshop session. MUPS's Weekend Access Policy requires said members to reserve in person the Darkroom Key. A deposit of $20 dollars in exchange for the Darkroom Key will be refunded upon key return at the end of the scheduled reservation. Each day that the key is not returned there will be a $5 penalty (taken out of the initial deposit). If the key is late a total of 4 days (penalty of $20), the full $20 dollars will go to SSMU in changing the Darkroom lock. We expect all of our members to follow and respect this regulation. Why do I have to pay? The membership buys you the usage of the Chemical Darkroom and/or Digital Darkroom as well as the Studio, wherein all of the necessary chemicals for developing and printing are supplied and prepared, as well as an iMac with Photoshop, Epson Slide/Film Scanner and Printer, and not to mention the tutorials in processing and printing in Black and White, Photoshop, studio, etc. All you need is a camera, film and some paper. We use the money for things like discounted film for members, chemicals, equipment, activities. Does MUPS rent out cameras? Yes, we will be renting out film SLRs and digital SLRs starting Fall 2009. Also try McGill's Audiovisual Arrangements in room 22 of Redpath Library. They loan out manual and digital cameras, lenses, projectors, and other AV equipment. Check out their website for prices and more info Does MUPS hold any social events? Yes! We hold photo outings and have guest speakers occasionally. Every year in March/April we hold the Photo Contest that is open to everyone in the McGill community, followed by a Wine & Cheese where the winners are announced. To stay up-to-date on the latest events, sign up for the MUPS Listserv. Let us know what events you'd like to see! I am a non-student photographer. Can I rent the Studio on a per-use basis? Yes, our studio is now open to select members of the community, independent photographers, and photography enthusiasts. Contact Adam Hirsch, the Studio Manager, for more details.
