Illinois Teams with Amateur Radio Operators to Create RACES Program

A newly forged partnership between Amateur Radio operators throughout the state of Illinois and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) will provide an additional layer of emergency communications during disasters. The agreement creates the State Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) program.

Air Force MARS Operators Support Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts

The 30th annual Salem Hamfair at Rickreall will take place on February 20, 2010. Registrations are now being accepted by mail to the Salem
Repeater Association, PO Box 17803, Salem, OR 97305. Advance tickets are $7.00 per person and does not include tickets to the raffle. You
must include a self address stamped envelope. Same day admission will be $8.00 and will go on sale at 8 AM. Doors open at 9 AM.

Haiti Amateur Radio Frequency Update/Reciprocal Operating

Considering the improving communications situation in Haiti, Dr Cesar Pio Santos, HR2P, IARU Region 2 EMCOR,
announced the release of HF frequencies, including 7.045 and 3.720 MHz, for normal use. He states, "We thank
the world radio amateur community for their support in keeping these frequencies clear during the past days."

If you plan on being in Lincoln City on Saturday February 6, the ham radio operators in Lincoln City invite you to join them for breakfast at Sambo's restaurant, on NE Hwy 101. Time is 7 AM or whenever you show. No meeting, no dues, just pay for your own meal.

IARU Region 2 Requests Frequencies Be Kept Clear After Massive Earthquake Strikes Haiti

On Tuesday, January 12 at 4:53 PM Haiti time (2153 UTC), a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince, the island nation's capital. Communications in and out of Haiti have been disrupted. No word has been received as of yet from any of Haitian Amateur Radio operators. The ARRL encourages US amateurs to be aware of the emergency operations on the following frequencies: 7.045 and 3.720 MHz (IARU Region 2 nets), 14.265, 7.265 and 3.977 MHz (SATERN nets), and 14.300 MHz (Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net); the International Radio Emergency Support Coalition (IRESC) is also active on EchoLink node 278173.

FCC Seeks Public's Help in Reform Effort

According to its chairman, the Federal Communications Commission wants to change the way it is seen by the American public. In order to further that effort, on January 7, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced that the Commission has launched a new Web site -- Reboot.FCC.gov-- saying it is the first-ever Web site dedicated to soliciting public input on ways to improve citizen interaction with the FCC, "creating a forum where the public can participate in improving the FCC."

FREE HAM RADIO CLASSES

Free technician (beginning) Ham classes (a series of three) are scheduled for   Jan. 16, 30 & Feb. 6, 2010 from 1-4 pm at the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Station #67 on Farmington Road in Beaverton.  (13810 SW Farmington Road, Beaverton) Oregon Tualatin Valley Amateur Radio Club sponsors these classes to aid in recruiting members for the Washington County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (WC ARES/RACES).

Most cities in Washington County have installed ham radios and antennae at their Emergency Operations Centers to help in time of emergency.   Now we just need more operators who are trained to use them.

ARLX001 NCVEC Releases New Technician Class Question Pool

The Question Pool Committee (QPC) of the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) released the new Technician class (Element 2) question pool on Monday, January 4. This new question pool will become effective for all examinations administered on or after July 1, 2010; it will remain valid until June 30, 2014.

The current Technician question pool that became effective July 1, 2006 will expire June 30, 2010.

The new Technician pool contains approximately 400 questions, from which 35 are selected for an Element 2 examination; it will contain graphics and diagrams, something new for this element.

The current General class question pool was effective July 1, 2007 and is valid through June 30, 2011.

The current Amateur Extra class pool was effective July 1, 2008 and is valid until June 30, 2012.
