More Helix

I put legs on the helix today. Then I cut out full size templates of the roadbed to confirm my plans.  The next step will be to build the portion of the lower level that will connect to the helix. I still haven't decided if the lower level should be at 34" or 35".

Helix Frame

Today I built the frame for the helix.  My plan is to frame in the lower level Helena yard and the base of the helix first. This sets the levels for the rest of the layout. My existing layout will be connected to the other end of the Helena yard. Then I'll build the helix up to the staging level and build out about 1/2 of that with a temporary return loop.  This will be phase one.

I added more 2x2's to the wall.  They are spaced 16" on center and screwed to floor joist on top. I used a power nailer to nail them to the concrete block wall.

Construction Begins

Well, it's official.  I started construction of my new layout today. The attached photo shows a full scale mockup to help confirm and set elevations.  The 2x2 vertical pilasters are permanent. The 2 modules are for mockup only. When I'm happy with the elevations, I will begin construction of the helix in the area to left of the mockup.

History Lesson - The 2 modules where constructed about 20 years ago by Rich, my brother Dave and myself for use at an NMRA convention in Manitowoc.   Dave and I put on a clinic to demonstrate computer generated switch lists. (Using a computer for model railroading was cutting edge at that time!)    We let convention goers print a switch list and then actually perform the switching on the modules. There were originally 4 modules but 2 have been demo'd.  I don't know why I kept the other 2 all these years, but at least I can put them to use for a short time.
