That may sound like a very
odd thing for a science teacher to say, but I firmly believe that, while
it is possible to study science, this is a very dull and uninteresting
pastime. It is FAR more interesting and useful to DO
science! Doing science involves spending time in a laboratory,
experimenting, getting your hands dirty, researching what other scientists
have done, building contraptions, asking questions, asking questions, and
asking questions. (Did I mention asking questions? This is the most
important part of doing science!)
I expect my students to learn to see themselves as scientists--anyone who
does science is a scientist! Even "fancy-pants scientists"
(people who do science for their full-time job) spend most of their time
asking questions and trying to find answers to them.
I believe that the job of any scientist who is a Christian is to ask
questions that will help them better understand the Lord and his amazing
creation. I want my students/scientists to proclaim that the heavens
truly do declare the glory of God! (Psalm 19:1) That
his works are wonderful! (Psalm 139:14) That all things definitely
do "hold together" in Christ! (Colossians 1:17) This
is my goal as a science teacher.
