Marquette started a week of five games strong last night with a 5-4 win over UW-Milwaukee. Marquette jumped on the board early and often en route to a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, some untimely defense came back to bite Marquette as UWM tied the game at 4-4. Heading into the sixth inning with two outs, Outfielder Joe Horrigan hit a shot up the middle of the pitcher who threw the ball away down the line allowing Horrigan to reach second. The next batter, DH Jordan Torres, than blooped a single into shallow right scoring Horrigan giving Marquette a 5-4 lead. However, the drama would not end there. After getting the first batter out in the seventh, Brian Collins allowed the next two runners to reach. With UWM's best hitter at bat, and a 1-1 count, Catcher Jordan Clark picked off a runner on second for the second out. Collins then got the hitter to groundout to third and ended a dramatic game. Collins went 7 strong innings, and the offense had 14 hits, in a valiant effort to help keep Marquette in contention for first place and its first trip to regionals. Marquette had an on and off weekend going 2-2. In the first three games, Marquette took on rival Madison and the games did not disappoint our largest fan turnout of the year. The fans were treated to a dramatic 1-0 victory in the first game. After Brian Collins loaded the bases with no outs, after a tremendous 6 inning performance, Dane Kempke came in. Dane induced a ground ball to third for the first out at home. The next batter hit a fly ball to right fielder Dave Riedel who caught the ball and gunned out the runner at home for the 1-0 dramatic victory over Madison. In the second game, some late runs from Madison put the game out of reach, 8-1, after the game was tied 1-1 after the fifth. Dave Wasser pitched a strong 6 innings. In the rubber match of the series on Sunday, Marquette's bats came alive and pounded out 13 hits en route to a 9-1 victory over Madison. The second game of the day came against UWM. Marquette was unable to throw strikes and UWM received a strong pitching performance from Chris Rowoldt en route to a 12-1 victory. Marquette will be back in action Thursday through Sunday this week in pursuit of the elusive first conference championship. Thanks to everyone who came to the Alumni Game!!!
