Weight Issues and Health

Using a Chinese medicine and compassionate approach to weight issues, whether under or overweight, we can design a treatment plan that includes one or a combination of acupuncture, herbs, supplements, massage and possibly the maintenance of a dietary journal.

The health of the Liver and Kidneys, being the major organs of detoxification, are key in successfully maintaining a healthy body weight.  Acupuncture can assist in strengthening these organs by increasing energetic flow and removing obstructions.  Chinese herbal formulas that promote digestion can assist.  For example, there are formulas that help break down fatty foods such as meats and oils, which by virtue of this action take some of the burden off of the metabolic processes, or heat, needed to break down carbohydrates and fats.  Formulas that promote better functioning of the Liver or Kidneys can also be used for patients who have symptoms of weakness, such as habitual constipation or diarrhea, fatigue especially after eating, and abnormal cravings.  Because herbs contain many vitamins and minerals in a balanced form, they can address deficiencies that trigger cravings, especially for sugar and starches.  These herbs are very safe and are monitored to ensure that side effects do not occur.

Acupuncture in and of itself also has a significant impact on affecting the metabolism, rewiring the nervous system so that cravings can be reduced or eliminated, and addressing the constitutional deficiencies that lead to eating issues.  Points are used to reduce cravings, improve metabolic processes, tonify organs and calm anxiety.  One patient may require more assistance in one area than another, such as someone who doesn't sleep well, eats at night, and wakes easily versus another patient who has a ravenous appetite upon waking, and craves fatty foods.  Points, as well as herbs, are in the form of personalized prescriptions, in order to address the needs of each individual patient.

Making changes in how we eat can bring about a more positive and optimistic view of the world, and ourselves.
We use an integrative approach, advising the patient to make small changes on their own, like drinking more water, and getting better sleep, in order to gain lasting results and empower them on their journey.  In some cases, we will advise you to keep a journal of what you eat, so that you can monitor yourself and learn more about what triggers your desire for specific foods.  We may ask you to bring this journal to your appointments as a way to support and reinforce new and better habits.  This journal is meant as a support tool, not as a means of criticizing or perfecting an eating plan.  We understand that lifestyle improvement, along with acupuncture and herbal interventions, will improve not only your actual body weight, but also how you feel and even how you think.
