First Grade homework gives first graders an opportunity to practice already taught skills learned in school. Homework packets are sent home on Fridays and collected on or before the following Friday. Students are given the choice of working on 1 page per day or finishing it at their own convenience. I recommend students learning a homework routine where your child knows the schedule of when to work on their homework. Whether its 1 page per night, every other night, or a weekend routine. The packet allows for flexibility, but it has been mentioned in the past that a homework routine discourages any battles that may occur as to when it will get finished. It is also recommended to find a spot in the house where homework is worked on regularly. Each homework packet will contain a reading record for family reading. This would include your child reading to you, you reading to them, or having other family members join in the fun! Please log on your child's minutes each week. At the end of the school year, we add up all of our reading minutes, graph our results, and celebrate how much we have read throughout the year. This activity is always more engaging when your child's minutes accurately reflects all of their hard work from the year. At times, your child will have a special project attached to the homework packet. These projects will have specific due dates unrelated to the homework. I will share this information with you in my weekly letter that goes home on Fridays. Please note: If you or your child have any questions pertaining to the homework or a special project, feel free to write me a note and send it in with the packet. The homework is a place to practice taught skills. If you have confusion or misunderstanding, please bring in what is finished and we can support your child in school with the rest of the packet. Homework packets go home on Fridays and can be returned on or before the following Friday, unless otherwise specified. We do not begin homework packets until after Open House - September 24th.
