Spring has Sprung in the

"SUPERSTARS" Pre-K 3 CLASS!

The Superstars finished up their alphabet as the weather became warmer and the days longer. In addition to our Letters-of-the-Week we learned about the seasons (specifically spring), the weather (as in, whether or not April showers do bring May flowers?) and science (we did an Earth Day project with the Middle School Science teacher!). Math (number identification and one-to-one correspondence) and letters (identification and sounds review) were also a focus in our small group work. We had a new addition to our class - we adopted "Lucky" the Goldfish after he was "abandoned" after this year's Middle School Science Fair. Lucky is happy to be alive and enjoying the love and attention of our Pre-K 3's!

Highlights of our year included field trips to Uncle Shucks Pumpkin Patch and Cagle's Dairy Farm, Fall Festival with Fourth Grade Buddies, participating in the Grandparents' Day and Christmas Programs, Modeling Easter Hats in our annual Parade and hunting for Easter Eggs, participating in a "Fiesta" on Cinco de Mayo and attending the Spring Musical "Pirates of Penzance". We ended our year with special "Moving Up" Program.

Mrs K and I would like to thank everyone for a terrific school year and hope that everyone enjoys their summer break!

"D" is for DUCK!

Our class loves Music with Mr. Libby, playing games on the Smartboard in the Library with Ms. Bembry during Technology, and PE with Coach Deubel. They are learning their colors and conversational Spanish with Senora Holbrook and end each class singing the "Adios Mis Amigos" song! Art with Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. Stokes is always amazing and the kids are creating masterpieces in the style of great artists like Charly Harper and Claude Monet.

Cooking days are special and so far we've created "School Bus" snacks, Friendship Mix, "Ants on a Log", homemade Butter and Biscuits, Turkey Cookies, Cornflake Christmas Wreaths and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer Toast. We'll be cooking our way through the rest of the school year with special kid-tested and loved recipes!

Judy and I have completed our fourth year teaching the "Superstars" Classes at the Atlanta Academy. Our goal is to introduce our newest students to preschool and teach them that school is a safe place to explore their world in many new and exciting ways. Our class combines independent play ("free choice"); large group, small group and individual instruction times; and various activities to support our  phonics-based curriculum including: arts and crafts which introduce or reinforce fine motor skills such as scissor skills, pencil and crayon control and correct grips, use of glue and gluesticks, etc; songs, chants and dances which reinforce pre-reading skills such as phonemic awareness and letter recognition and the pre-math skills of identifying and repeating patterns or directions as well as working with gross motor movements; books, nursery rhymes and poems which encourage familiarity with print, letter recognition and the beginnings of phenomic awareness; and weekly cooking projects which introduce the pre-math skills of following multi-step instructions, counting and measuring. Science and Social Studies are introduced through activities on the Five Senses, the Seasons, Bugs and Butterflies, Families, Community Helpers, and many others.

Supplementing our classroom experience are the six "Specials" classes - Library, Art, Music, P.E., Spanish and Technology (Computers); field trips to local places of interest, in-school programs from community helpers (fire fighters, police officers, dentist, etc) and participation in various school-wide events such as Fall Festival, Grandparents' Day and Christmas Programs, and the Art Show. After school care is available until 6pm through the Atlanta Academy "Extended School Program" and a local dance school will offer weekly dance classes on site for Preschoolers and Lower School students for an additional fee.

Please feel free to contact me through email if you have any questions about our class or the Atlanta Academy. School tours continue all year and can be coordinated through the main office (678-461-6102).
