Develop a hinge and clip building system at the microscale

  • Create a micromachined clip that pairs with itself at 90° so that two micromachined clips can be interconnected without breaking. The clip should be as compact as possible.
  • Design a set of parts that are based on these clips. The parts should be general (Lego-like).
  • Equip some parts with holders for ball lenses, and others with at least one further optical function (e.g., prism, lense, grating, fresnel lense, mirror)
  • Create a base plate from which the construction with manufactured parts can start.
  • Create a hinge structure that would allow a part containing an optical component to be moved parallel to one of the construction axes by a significant distance.

System test

  • Create an advanced optical system using your system, such as an interferometer, or an optical zoom, or a scanner. Describe why your system is not restricted to this implementation.
