THE SKY TONIGHT

Here we feature a look at the current evening sky, its stars, and constellations. We discuss such star groupings as Andromeda, Pegasus the Flying Horse, and Cassiopeia in October, November and December; Orion the Hunter, Taurus the Bull, the Big and Little Dogs and the Gemini twins take center stage from January through March; and in the springtime, we feature Leo the Lion and Ursa Major, the Great Bear. Also discussed are any planets or spectacular deep sky objects that can be found in the sky that evening.

A TRIP THROUGH SPACE

This presentation will take you and your students on a whirlwind tour of outer space, including a journey across our solar system, and outward to the stars, nebulae and galaxies in the far-flung Universe. We will feature the latest information and pictures of the planets and other discoveries made by the Hubble Space Telescope and other telescopes and space probes.

THE PLANETS

A new production of a classic show, narrated by Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager.) Discover how the solar system formed. Journey with the Vikings, Mariners, Voyagers and other robot explorers of our solar system as they encounter the barren surfaces of Mercury and Venus, the great ancient volcanoes of Mars, the perils of the asteroid belt, the stormy gas giant planets and their cold rings, the far-flung comets. Then, using the Hubble Space Telescope, we search for other solar systems beyond ours!

GREAT WATER ODYSSEY

The Great Water Odyssey has creative, interactive lessons designed specifically to reach 5th grade students and teach them about the importance of our water resources. It is an animated story that follows waterdrops Hydro and Agua through the town of Olliewood. The waterdrops change state, float through Florida’s wetlands, rivers and aquifers. The waterdrops recall Florida’s past and even help residents plan their future through water conservation and waterwise landscaping.  Each animated learning module is followed by an interactive exploration screen, where students earn points by exploring a scene that reinforces the lesson.   For more information, go to: http://thegreatwaterodyssey.com/ This program is sponsored by South Florida Water Management.

Teachers will receive:

Educator’s manual, including CD, quizzes and assessments

The Xtreme Science Xtreme Sports Camp will marry the excitement of sports such as surfing and paintball to the even more excitement of using the science and math formulas of the SSS Reference Page.  Yes…this is the sneaky way to help you learn techniques to bring science into the real world of students and YOU.  You will learn to calculate work =force x distance by doing some work over a varying distances (like walking a trail.)  Who does more work?  The 110 pound sprightly one who makes it for 3 miles without breaking a sweat or the 200 pound body of American health who covers 2 miles in the same amount of time?

Experiment with healthy snacks every day.  Do you feel better after some snacks than others?  How about Density?  Compare floating that beach ball with floating a golf ball while you are trying to stand up on a surfboard?  What is floating all about anyway?    It’s free camp for you…that even pays a healthy stipend.
