Response Options

Independent Work Station

Read a story from The Civically Engaged Reader. Many times after reading a selection we are moved to read, write, think and create more.  It is a good thing when a story moves you to want to ACT.  Using the following links and rubrics, follow the directions for one option after reading a story that makes you want to ACT!

Low Complexity Options (25 point projects)
  1. PPT retelling of the selection. PowerPoint retelling of a story.  Look at "Appearances to the contrary."  There are two versions, one by the author and one by a professor at UNF.
  2. Mimic the story- Create your own story as the assigned selection as a guide. Look at "If I were music." What music would you be?
  3. Retell and record the selection with puppets or claymation. Rubric
  4. Develop a wordless picture book to retell the selection.
  5. Find three plays. Identify metaphors used in each play.  
  6. Locate a FCC rule that interests you about TV Broadcasting.  Summarize the rule.
  7. List the rules, in your own words, the FCC has for Children's and Educational Programing.
  8. Click on TABLES on the FCC website.  Locate how many kilometers channel 16's sound can travel.
  9. First click the link that is called Lead Powerpoint Notes.  Then, Complete the Assignment called Writing Leads.
  10. View the lower thirds.  Create a new lead for the CER story and place it in a lower third that you create in keynote using the transparency function and masking. 
  11. Read the headlines from today's newspapers.  Choose one and re-write it as a TV story.
  12. Find a chart or graph in the Chicago Tribune.  Describe what is in the graph.
  13. Play the News Mania game.
  14. Want to be a reporter?  Follow the links to try it out on your own.  (you will need Photobooth to help you.)
  15. Watch the following link about the rule of thirds. Then, go to iPhoto and find the tool that will help you with this concept.  Print the picture you worked with.

Medium Complexity Options (50 point projects)
  1. Read a story from The Civically Engaged Reader
    1. Blog or e-mail a standard essay. FCAT 6pt Rubric
    2. Podcast your standard essay. Storytellng Rubric -Voice and expression only (open Garage Band and follow the video tutorials) get ideas from Generation PRX 
    3. Show and tell a story using photo booth about something you have or an experience that connects you to the selection.
    4. Using the following list of words.  Create a storyboard of how you would shoot the story.
    5. Build a TV studio model box to stage an interview with a character from the story.
    6. Choose any of the following 5 video assignments.
  2. Build a table showing waterflow in Florida.
  3. Click on TV Interview Assignment on the following page.  
  4. Explore Student Press website.  Write a 300 word description of the website.
  5. Creating a sports story. Using the words listed on the lined page.  Write your own TV story about a Julia Landon Sports game.
  6. View the following page about rule of thirds.  Create 4 examples of your own about what to do and what not to do.
  7. Click on script provided.  Compete all 30 shots and submit the tape.  

High Complexity Options (100 point projects)
  1. Rewrite the selection as a newspaper story.
  2. Adapt the selection into a five person drama script.
  3. Select a character from the story.  Retell the selection from that perspective in an e-book form.
  4. Interpret characters and the mood of a selection through dance.

  5. Create a Rebus story to share with children about the topic.  When you finish, I will share your story with Mrs. Houston's West Riverside Elementary kindergarten class. 
  6. Conducting a survey at school.
  7. Creating and editorial cartoon.
  8. Apply for a job in TV. Write your fictitious application for a job in TV/Flim.
  9. Write your own word of the day for the month.  
  10. Find the school for you!  Create a Venn Diagram showing the uniquness of tv production degrees.  Which one is for you?
  11. Newspaper Assignment
  12. Photo Journalism Assignment
  13. Be a TV critic.  Complete the entire lesson with a partner.  Turn in all assignments.
  14. Create your own tv blog.  Analyze shows and write about them (5 critical analyzes required.)
  15. TV is storytelling. Complete all assignments.
