| Directed Notes Bookmark Directions
Directed Notes, or semantic differential scales (Beers 2003), place opposite character traits (strong/weak, optimistic/pessimistic) at opposite ends of a scale, then ask students to decide how much of the trait a character possesses.
Using the bookmark template (Beers 2003) below develop your thoughts on sections in the selection where the character is __________ or __________ (you will receive the scale when you receive the assignment.)
Shared Inquiry Discussion Directions
Shared Inquiry Discussions (SID) (The Great Books Foundation 1999) are simply opportunities to explore an interpretive problem in depth.
- Sit in a circle with your group.
- Write your written responses to the question provided.
- Choose a facilitator. (This person should gather the facilitator directions from Ms. Peacock-Preston.)
- Review the guidelines:
- Only those who have read the selection may take part in the discussion.
- Discussion is restricted to the selection that everyone has read.
- All opinions should be supported with evidence from the selection.
- Leaders may only ask questions, not answer them.
- At the least, you must share your written response.
- After the discussion is complete, blog your response to one of the following questions.
"I want to keep my original written answer." What makes your answer strong? "I heard a new idea I liked that I want to merge with my originial written idea." What was it? Why do you like it?
"I want to completly change my orignial written answer." Why?
