Hello all!
I am looking forward to another great year. 3 school years ago we began a whole new Chemistry program and it was a great success. There are NO textbooks used in this course! Whoah! Hold on, NO textbooks! Yes, NO textbooks but a whole lot of thinking and learning going on!! Of course, there are textboooks that all students can refer to if they need to look things up. This approach is called "Modeling Chemistry". In "Modeling Chemistry" students are the "teachers". There will be lots of labs, activities, video clips and simulations. In doing these various activities, students will be pushed to think through what is happening at the particle level. In doing so, they will be led to think through the molecular model of the atom. Lots of discussion will be part of the program. Which should lend itself to students thinking more and being lectured to less. Hopefully this approach will make for a much more stimulating and fun classroom for all to enjoy. This approach uses a technique called "whiteboarding". Here the students write out models and their own theories of what they believe is happening in each activity. They make theories, continually proving and disproving them. In the end, they actually have figured out the Chemistry and basically written their own textbooks. As I have mentioned, this approach should lend itself to a very stimulating and dynamic classroom. So enjoy the site! There are links to the video clips, simulations, worksheets, assignments due, some outlines and, Lord willing, pictures and summaries of what was discussed in class. So, if students are absent this site should make if very easy to stay caught up on all classwork. I'm hoping this will be a help to students and parents alike!
