FAQ

Here you will find a list of questions that are commonly asked Ms. Nelson and about the Chemistry course.  Ms. Nelson will continue to add questions as they come up.

Is there a lot of HW for this class?  The short answer would be , yes.  HW is given pretty much on a daily basis, and yes, that does include Fridays.  HW assignments will be listed on the class board and the Calendar page.  If you need help with your HW or lab the Daily Notes, Lab Videos, Outlines and Power Points    and   Chemtutor Sites pages should all be of help to you.

Do we need anything for this class, like a textbook?  There are no textbooks for this class.  Yippee!  No heavy books to carry!  You will, however, need a 3-ring binder, dividers (at least 6) and a writing utensil.  Ms. Nelson has had her students use other options for holding the tremendous amount of notes, worksheets and lab papers but 3-ring binders work the best.  This will help each student stay organized and aid in not losing your papers and notes.

What if I am absent when a lab is due?  Do I still have to hand in my lab reports on the due date?   Again, the short answer is YES.  Your lab reports will be written by a lab group.  Therefore, someone in your lab group can hand in your report on time.  Proper planning and not procrastinating (I know, Ms. Nelson sometimes has that disease also), should prevent any late papers.  Ms. Nelson realizes there are such things as emergencies and we will deal with those situations on a case by case basis.  Remember, you can always e-mail your lab report which actually gets you extra credit on your labs!!  e-mail to both addresses:  lnelson@capemaytech.com and pooknpen@comcast.net

What if I am on a Field Trip, do I have to hand in my lab report on the due date?  A resounding, YES!  Let me be very clear, FIELD TRIPS ARE NOT ABSENCES.  Your lab group is not given an extra day to do your report just because your Field Trip is scheduled the the day your lab is due.  Again, you need to PLAN for these occasions and either have one of your lab partners make sure they hand in your report or you can e-mail the report to Ms. Nelson: lnelson@capemaytech.com and pooknpen@comcast.net.

Why aren't any textbooks needed for this class?  Yes, Ms. Nelson does realize that this seems very peculiar but rest assured you will learn lots of Chemistry, more than you thought yourself capable.  Ms. Nelson has completed this program several years now and is very pleased with the results.  Of course, you will have lots of notes, power points, chemtutor sites, worksheets, and what-not to look at on top of the  practice problems completed in class.  For those that want, there are textbooks available for you to look at and refer to.

Is there any tutoring and/or extra help for this class?  Of course, you can see Ms. Nelson most any day to receive extra help.  I will have a tutoring schedule that will begin at the end of Septemeber.  Tutoring will be for those Ms. Nelson requests to be in there and for those that would like extra help.  Please be forewarned, Ms. Nelson does not use extra "help" to do your HW for you.  If you want help you will need to come prepared with your classnotes and at least attempt the problems.  It is not a problem for you to do things wrong, Ms. Nelson will help you with that.  But it will be a problem for you to leave blanks on your papers, not look at your notes or the website for help, and then ask Ms. Nelson to finish your work.  In EVERY problem, SOMETHING can be written.  Even if you only write out what you are "given" and what the problem "wants", at least that is a start.

Can my parents contact you?  Absolutely, anytime.  Just have them call (x 157) or e-mail.  E-mail would be better. Then I can get back to them when I do not have a class.  lnelson@capemaytech.com
