The Youth Choir @ St Mary's

The Youth Choir is a four part (SATB) group of about 30 talented young musicians between the ages of 8 and 20. They are an important part of the whole church choir but also rehearse and perform as a group in their own right. The bulk of the group form the treble section of the choir with alto tenor and bass parts sung by ex-trebles.

As the young people gain experience and improve, they work through a training scheme based on the Royal School of Church Music’s Voice for Life programme. They achieve a range of ribbons culminating in the externally examined Dean’s and Bishop’s awards – approximately equivalent to grade 3 and 5 respectively. In exceptional circumstances singers can go on to achieve the coveted RSCM gold award (grade 8). The Youth Choir currently boasts 8 Dean’s awards and 4 Bishop’s.
