10/27/09: Students completed their rewrites from yesterday and began analyzing a new poem "Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question".
10/26/09: Students completed a rewrite of their assigned monologue, writing to a new audience to practice with voice and persona.
10/21/09-10/23/09: Students completed the punctuation chart on page 35 of SpringBoard and then we jigsawed the readings of the various monologues on pages 36-41, completing the SOAPStone activity on page 42 for one of the monologues.
10/20/09: We worked more with voice and persona today. Students wrote a letter to Mrs.Glysteen and another letter on the same topic to demonstrate difference in voice.
10/19/09: We read and analyzed the song lyrics "Imagine", looking at voice, persona, and tone.
10/15-10/16/09: In-class timed write about Time Capsule. Due at the end of the class on Friday.
10/12-10/14: We are putting finishing touches on the Digital Story products, getting them ready for presentations.
10/09-10/9/09: Students have been working diligently on their Digital Story products.
9/30/09: We continued our look at the "Where I'm From" poem and students began either writing their own poem or loading their pictures into a folder on their student account.
9/29/09: We began class by writing one sentence using imagery to appeal to at least 2 different senses, just like Cisneros. We then completed the "Circles of Influence" activity, examining all the different ways in which we are influenced and our culture is created. We then read and analyzed "Where I'm From".
9/28/09: We read three excerpts from House on Mango Street to examine the author's use of imagery and symbolism.
9/25/09: We practiced two different types of analysis questions today using the text of "Theme for English B" then took a test on the same text using the same type of questions.
9/24/09: We used the TWIST graphic organizer to continue analyzing the poem "Theme for English B".
9/23/09: We began analyzing the poem "Theme for English B".
9/22/09: We learned to read art today. We examined the significance of symbolism, color, detail, etc.
9/21/09: We explored the idea of perception, reviewed symbolism, and brainstormed a list of ideas for images to include in our Digital Stories.
9/18/09: We finished analyzing Funny in Farsi today.
9/17/09: Today in class, we reviewed the culture terms assimilation, cultural norms, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, and diversity. We read Funny in Farsi and analyzed the text with a focus on syntax, diction, and imagery.
9/16/09: Today in class, we defined culture and identified the components that make up culture (language, clothes, food, religion, traditions, etc.)
9/15/09: Today, we wrapped up our analysis of the quilt poem.
9/14/09: In class today we created our symbols for our class quilt and analyzed the theme of the poem.
9/11/09: In class today, we analyzed the syntax, diction, and imagery in "My Mother Pieced Quilts".
9/10/09: In class today, we brainstormed ideas about images from our childhood (page 6), read the poem "My Mother Pieced Quilts", and began analyzing the poem for imagery.
9/9/09: In class today, we analyzed the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the first unit, previewing the Focus Questions and examining more closely the two Embedded Assessments.
9/8/09: In class today we unpacked the book, examining the key elements in each unit of study for the year. Additionally, we unpacked the first two embedded assessments for Unit One: Voices of Modern Culture.
