Please note that students who are failing will be asked to come after school and work with either me or Mr. Moynihan.  This might give some students the incentive to work in class and might give others the individual time that they need.

 

We took our Chapter Two test last week and students, as a whole, DID NOT DO WELL!!! And here are the key reasons why... 

 

Almost no one took their notes out and used them as guidelines even though it was allowed AND recommended. We realize that there is a lot of material and that a periodic reference tool is helpful.

 

Very few kids showed their work.  This is such an important skill to have in math.  Show each step even though you "know" the answer.  Based on the grades and mistakes, eighth graders are not as gifted at doing math in their heads as they think they are! For example, one of our problems was "Evaluate 12 - x when x = -3" and the most common answer given was 9.  The correct answer is 15:

 

 

I have handed back clean, fresh copies of the test and have asked all of my students to "retake" this test using their book and their notes.  They should have an adult in school or at home check their work and sign it.  You don't have to check their answers, just that they are taking the time to show neat, organized work.
