Description of Course
United States History, beginning with the 20th century and ending with current events, will be covered in a variety of ways to meet each student’s individual learning style. Basic material will be covered through textbook reading assignments and note taking from lectures. In-depth material will be covered through primary source readings, class discussions, class projects, and hands-on assignments. 21st Century Skills as well as the National Historical Thinking Standards will be integrated throughout the year, such as in learning how to use google doc’s and Photostory, creating a webpage, and using the internet for research. An emphasis will be placed on the student research paper during the first half of the year and on MCAS preparation the second half.
Honors Work
At the Honors level, students are expected to be independent learners with guided instruction in a student-centered class. Thus, the teacher will act more as a facilitator at the Honors level. Honors level work is expected to demonstrate deep analytical and synthesis skills as well as excellent writing. Although this course will focus on improving those skills, rudimentary skills will not be taught at the Honors level. Honors students should also expect a substantial amount of homework, mostly in the form of reading and writing, and yet still take initiative in their learning and seeking out extra help as needed. |
