Mock Trial

The Mock Trial Program is a rich curriculum that promotes the development of fundamental knowledge, sound judgment and critical thinking skills. In Mock Trial, students are placed in a simulated courtroom situation where they assume the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a hypothetical case.  Each year our team travels to courtrooms around the state in order to compete against other schools in a predetermined case.   The program is designed to allow students to experience first hand how a real courtroom operates.  In addition, students who participate will:

  • Receive a further understanding of the law, court procedures, and our legal system.
  •  Sharpen their analytical, listening and speaking skills.
  • Promote better communication and cooperation between their school community and legal profession.

Participation in Mock Trial gives WHS students the opportunity to be:

Effective Communicators, who receive, interpret, and convey knowledge and ideas clearly and purposefully in a variety of modes.  Students must prepare to speak publicly either as a witness or attorney.  In both cases, they must be able to respond to questions immediately based on their preparation.

Innovative Problem Solvers, who use inductive and deductive reasoning to address current and emerging issues, organize and analyze information, and pursue promising solutions with flexibility.

Students must work as a team to organize a case strategy  for either the defense or prosecution, based on the Mock Trial rules and case.

Self-Directed Learners, who understand themselves, make informed choices concerning their cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being; and monitor and accept responsibility for their continuous learning.

Students choose their team roles based on their strengths and weaknesses.  They can be an attorney and do a direct, cross-examination, opening or closing or be a witness.

Skilled Leaders, who use interpersonal and leadership skills to work effectively with peers and groups to accomplish common goals.
Students work together and take on leadership roles in the competions.
