The Mock Trial Program is a rich curriculum that promotes the development of fundamental knowledge, sound judgment and critical thinking skills. In Mock Trial, students are placed in a simulated courtroom situation where they assume the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a hypothetical case. Each year our team travels to courtrooms around the state in order to compete against other schools in a predetermined case. The program is designed to allow students to experience first hand how a real courtroom operates. In addition, students who participate will:
Participation in Mock Trial gives WHS students the opportunity to be: Effective Communicators, who receive, interpret, and convey knowledge and ideas clearly and purposefully in a variety of modes. Students must prepare to speak publicly either as a witness or attorney. In both cases, they must be able to respond to questions immediately based on their preparation.
Students must work as a team to organize a case strategy for either the defense or prosecution, based on the Mock Trial rules and case. Self-Directed Learners, who understand themselves, make informed choices concerning their cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being; and monitor and accept responsibility for their continuous learning. Students choose their team roles based on their strengths and weaknesses. They can be an attorney and do a direct, cross-examination, opening or closing or be a witness.
Skilled Leaders, who use interpersonal and leadership skills to work effectively with peers and groups to accomplish common goals. |
