Class Activity

WELCOME parents and students! I am very excited to begin the 2009-2010 school year.  This is my fourth year at Dr. Hornedo Middle School and would like to introduce myself as your new 8th grade Math teacher.  I hope to spark interest in the area of mathematics, encourage students to take ownership of their education and of course, be successful.  I'm here to help students and I am open to any helpful suggestions.

You will find my email address at the top of the page.  This is one of the best ways to reach me because I check my email several times throughout the day and evening.

To ensure a positive and productive learning environment, there are a few procedures that I require my students to follow:

LATE WORK 8th Grade Math

Late work will be accepted under the following conditions:
1 day late = 70 *(or lower after graded)
2 days late= 50 *
* (or lower after graded) means that incomplete assignments turned in on day 2 or 3 may be lower than 70 or 50

LATE WORK Pre AP Algebra 1

NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED.

CLASS WORK

1. To receive credit, students MUST write the problem (if applicable) and SHOW ALL WORK done to obtain an answer.  This helps me assess students’ thinking and understanding of processes.  NO credit will be given for “Answer only” papers.

2. Each student’s work will be kept in his/her binder.

ASSESSMENTS

All assignments receive equal weight in the grade book unless otherwise noted in advance.  Tests will count twice.  If an assignment or project is to be counted as more than one grade, it will be stated in writing as part of the instructions or guidelines.

8th Grade Math

Students will earn a grade based on the following categories:

1.  Warm Ups

2.  Homework (5 Homework assignments equal one grade)

3.  Practice Worksheets

4.  Completed class work

5.  Quizzes

6.  Tests (Count twice)

Pre AP Algebra 1

CONFERENCES

If you would like to contact me, you may call the school at 231-2200 or email me. Please allow at least 24-hour notice for a conference. My conference period is 9:45 – 10:20 am Tuesday - Thursday.

PARENTS

You can help your child in several ways:

  • Know what your child’s assignments are by checking their Planner or Assignment Sheet. This page is filled out in class daily and is a recording of assignments, quizzes, tests, etc.
  • Have your child share his or her math notebook with you, showing you what has been recorded as we progress through the content. Ask your child to explain why these ideas are important.
  • Look over completed work (homework, quizzes, and tests) and make sure that errors have been corrected.
  • Encourage your child to attend after school tutoring or go to the Homework Center. Times, teachers’ names, and room numbers will be posted.
  • Math on Call can be used as a resource at home and is available through the Hornedo PTA.  There is an order form in the student welcome folder.
  • Visit http://www.phschool.com/math/cmp/parent_help_children.html for more assistance.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to meeting you.
