Teaching History
My name is Julie Edwards and I have been teaching school for twelve years. I began my teaching career after graduating from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia in 1997 with a BA in Sociology and Anthropology. I returned to Raleigh and started teacing 5th grade at York Elementary School. During this four year time period I got married and finished a Masters degree in education at Meredith College. My husband's job took us to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2000.
In Charlotte, I decided it was time to change grades and accepted a job teaching 6th grade language arts at Alexander Graham Middle School. I enjoyed teaching and living in Charlotte for 6 years. During this time I received my National Board Teaching certification and had my son, Henry. Unfortunately, in 2006 my husband died unexpectedly. Henry and I relocated back to Raleigh to be near family.
I accepted a Title I reading teacher position at Willow Springs Elementary Year Round School here in Wake County. Next, I had the opportunity to teach 4th grade at the same school for the 2007-2008 school year.
Henry and I bought a house in Raleigh and the commute to Willow Spring became too time consuming. I jumped at the opportunity to work at a brand new year round school in Raleigh when I heard that Kristen Faircloth had been named the prinicpal! I was given a choice of grade levels and I knew 5th grade was the place for me. I am excited to have a home at such a wonderful school filled with amazing teachers at every level.
Outside of School
I enjoy spending time with my 3 and a half year old son, Henry. He is always on the run and keeps me active. I love outdoor activities like camping, water skiing, and running. I also love to shop and even cook a little! I enjoy going to see live music (when I have the chance). I espcially love reading and keeping up with current young adult literature. I'm always on the lookout for book recommendations.
I love traveling and wish my salary would allow for more! My family has a cabin at Kerr Lake (near the Virginia border). This is where I do the majority of my water skiing.
