Classroom Procedures

Beginning of Class

1.  Please use passing time to get water, use the bathroom and take care of other personal needs. Sharpening pencils can also be distracting during class time; please try to sharpen pencils before class.

2.  When the bell rings, you should be seated in your assigned seat and answering the opening question in your notebook.

3.  Within the first 3-4 minutes of class you should also record your homework from the whiteboard into your binder reminder.

Once Class Has Begun

4.  If you arrive late to class, you must sign the “Late Sign-In” sheet.  If you have a pass, please hand it to me so that I remember to change your attendance entry.  If you do not have a pass, then you will be marked tardy.  Then quietly take your seat and begin working.

5. If you have a question, please raise your hand, and I will either call on you or come to you.

6.  Usually, when I am in the front of the classroom and I address the entire class (‘’listen up”, “let’s come together”), I want your collective attention.  This should take less than 5 seconds.  I do not like to shout, so please be attentive.

7.  You are allowed FOUR RESTROOM/WATER PASSES PER TRIMESTER, so I suggest you only leave class if it is an emergency.  You must give me a filled-out pass (name, date, time) before you can leave.  Then, take the hall pass.

8.  You may not get out of your seat to check makeup work or talk with friends during class.  This must be done before school, passing time, during snack, lunch or after school.

Materials

9.   Please bring your materials to class everyday; you will not be allowed to leave the classroom to retrieve these materials once class has begun.

10.  Some supplies (paper, pencils) may be available to you, if you have forgotten/run out.  These items are meant to be a back-up ONLY, as it is your responsibility to come prepared.  Please return the item, if possible, at the end of class.

11.  Pencil sharpeners, a stapler, a hole puncher, and tape are also available for your use. Please do not get up in the middle of class (particularly if someone is talking) to use these items; use them before or after class.

Assignments

12.  Include your name, date, and period on all papers.  Assignments that have multiple pages should be stapled before submitting them.

13.  Lab reports/papers/projects that are due should be placed in your period’s homework bin, located on the student table, upon arrival to class.  Hang on to all homework that is due until given instructions (it may be checked or collected during class)

14.  If you are turning any assignment in late, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to place it in your period’s homework bin to receive partial credit.

Absences

15.  If you are absent, you must place all assignments that were due on the day(s) of your absence in your period’s homework bin on the day of your return in order to receive full credit for that assignment.

16.  You should check the “Absent Binder” to determine what we did in class while you were absent.  Following that determination, you may need to see me to reschedule labs, quizzes, or tests and/or obtain missed notes/worksheets/handouts.  The best times to do this are before school, during snack, just before lunch or after school.  You can also check in with your study buddies for any class notes.

Dismissal

17.  You should remain in your seats until the end of the period.  I will dismiss you, not the bell.

Lab

18.  Most labs will be performed in pairs or groups of four.  When I say “work with your partner” you will work with the person sitting next to you at your table.  When I say “work with your large lab groups” you will work with your partner and the pair sitting across from you.

19.  Please only send one person to obtain or return your group’s lab bin/materials, goggles, and aprons.  This does not mean one person should be in charge of doing all these tasks; please distribute the tasks accordingly.  Everyone has a responsibility to help setup and cleanup their lab area.

Other

20.  Please do not use the following (unless you have my permission): items in/on my desk, the television/VCR/DVD, the cabinets and the whiteboard.

21.  You are not allowed in the chemical prep room (unless you have my permission)

22.  Please do not sit on the desks or tables.  Please sit appropriately on the stools.
