Curriculum Topics for 3rd quarter

  • Reading: Throughout third quarter, the students will focus on reading and comprehending narrative text. We will study the different types of fiction text including fairy tales, realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasies, and mysteries. We will evaluate the text structure of each type analyzing the plot and characters.

  • Writing: The students will write narratives this quarter. Focus will be on writing effective beginnings, middles, and ends. The students will use seeds from their writing notebooks to write personal and immaginative stories.

  • Math: Third quarter math will continue to build problem solving strategies using all computations. A focus will be placed on "learning" multiplication facts. Remember that we will begin with learning the properties of zero and one as they apply to multiplication and then we will learn 5's and 10's, 2's and 3's, square numbers, 9's and then the last six facts.  Other math topics will include algebra, 2 and 3-D geometry, and measuring capacity.  Students will have the opportunity to make geometry robots this quarter!!!!

  • Science: This quarter's unit will be on Soils! The students will study different types of soil, learn about composting, and a soil's ability to retain water and sustain growth. This unit is the foundation for our final third grade unit on plants! The students will begin the quarter with a Hands on Science Experience from High Touch, High Tech!

  • Social Studies: We will explore economics and community!!!!
