As an educator, It is neccessary to understand the strategies used to help English Language learners. We should foster learning experiences to help them use their verbal skills daily, reading skills, and their developing vocabulary. Even though I am not a reading teacher, I must incorporate their reading, and writing to develop their content knowledge and prepare them for college. I have attached my final assignment talking about my ideal ELD program and below is a short reflection on the SIOP video we watched in class. After watching the video in the last class, it has reinforced how important it is to have the content accessible to all of the students. In my graduate program I studied the SIOP model, and I use many aspects of the protocol in my classroom, because I have many ELs in my classroom. Over the last 2 years I have realized too that not only do the EL like the differentiated strategies, but the students that speak English fluently also like the strategies because they make learning fun. I also enjoyed the first lesson that walked us through the history of language. It was a nice refresher for me because I have not heard the history in about 4 years. I was interesting to see where we have been and where we are headed. |
