Monday December 1, 2008 - Friday December 5, 2008
 
This week, we are beginning a new unit.  Here is the Georgia State Standard indicating what we are going to learn now:

GPS:  SS7H1 The student will analyze continuity and change in Africa leading to the 21st century.

a. Explain how the European partitioning across Africa contributed to conflict, civil war, and artificial political boundaries.

b. Explain how nationalism led to independence in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.

c. Explain the creation and end of apartheid in South Africa and the roles of Nelson Mandela and F.W.de Klerk.

d. Explain the impact of the Pan-African movement.

 
Monday December 1:

Target:  Read p. 191 in your textbook and then answer this question.  Why did Europeans draw political boundaries in Africa?  (Answer: To lessen the tension between European powers.  SS Notebook p. 91)

3.      Housekeeping: New SS Notebook Title starting on p. 91 is: European partitioning of Africa

4.      Make-up stuff:  Need to see MOYA flags from absent students.

5.      Collect Deforestation Projects from ALL students except those who were absent.

6.      Late Test Takers: Send to another room to make-up the Africa Geography and Culture TEST

7.      View: History Channel Video - Ship of Slaves: The Middle Passage

 
Tuesday December 2:

Target:  Look at the cartoon in your textbook on p. 190.  What does it mean?  How do you think Europeans of the late 1800’s reacted to this drawing?  (Answer: Answers will vary, The cartoon means that Britain wanted to control all of Africa and wanted to have transportation spanning the continent to transport natural resources more easily.)    (SS Notebook p. 91).

2.      Log HW: Review Imperialism notes for Quiz on Friday

3.      Collect: Deforestation Projects, MOYA Flags, and get any other late test takers to take the test.

4.      Define: imperialism, nationalism, Samory Toure on SS Notebook p. 92 (Power Point Presentation, Imperialism in Africa - See attachment below)

5.      Preread: Chapter 8 Section 3 pp. 190 – 193.  (Look at headings, subheadings, map, and pictures)

6.      Copy “Imperialism in Africa” Graphic Organizer from Power Point Presentation. (SS Notebook p. 92)

7.      Collaborative Group Activity: Work in pairs to read section and complete graphic organizer.

8.      Class Discussion:  Discuss complete Graphic Organizer and discuss whether or not industrialization had made imperialism practically inevitable and how the abuses of imperialism could have been avoided.

 
Wednesday December 3:

Target:  Examine the picture of Samory Toure on p. 192.  What emotion is Toure expressing in this portrait?  Why do you think he feels this way?  (Answer: grief or frustration.  He feels this way because he is against colonialism and wants to keep his country independent. SS Notebook p. 91).

3.      Visual – Spatial Activity:  Using the notes you took yesterday on SS Notebook p. 92, Imagine you are either a European government official in favor of imperialism OR an African resisting European imperialism.  Create an editorial cartoon expressing the viewpoint of your side on SS Notebook p. 93. 

 
Thursday December 4:

Target:  Using the map of Africa on p. 191, answer the following question.  Which African nations were not European colonies?  (Answer: Liberia and Ethiopia, SS Notebook p. 91).

2.      Log HW: Study Imperialism Notes for Quiz

3.      Imperialism Note-Taking Activities: Complete Ch. 8 Sect. 3 Know-it Notes (See attachment below) (Glue to SS Notebook p. 94) and Complete Ch. 8 Sect. 3 Main Idea Notes (See attachment below) (Glue to SS Notebook p. 95).

4.      Discuss Answers to Imperialism Notes. 

5.      Independent Study Time.

 

Friday December 5:

Target:  Read textbook p. 193 again.  What do you think the phrase “civilized warfare” means?  (Answer: Zulu warriors looked differently than the British army.  The British considered themselves “civilized” and considered African tribes to be “uncivilized”.  SS Notebook p. 91)

2.      Log HW: None

3.      Review: Complete Ch. 8 Sect. 3 Review questions # 1-4.  Write out questions and answers on SS Notebook p. 96.

4.      Go over answers and answer any last minute questions.

5.      QUIZ – Imperialism of Africa (10 fill-in-the-blank questions)…consider open notes quiz?

6.      Trade and Grade Quizzes, if time.

7.      Extend: The White Man’s Burden poem about Imperialism, if time.
