 Unit 3 Essay Questions

** Historical context is a key to understanding most of the selections in this unit.  Choose two or three selections, and write an essay in which you explain the importance of historical context to each, drawing on specific examples to help make your points.

 

**Nearly every selection in this unit focuses on a form of heroism, be it major or minor.  In an essay, explain the role that heroic characters play in at least two of the selections in this unit.  Give clear reasons for your answer, and support it with relevant (important) examples and quotations from the texts of your chosen selections.

 

** Understanding conflict –and how to resolve it –enables us to navigate the unexpected twists and turns that life often presents.  In an essay, discuss the way in which conflict is resolved in at least two of the selections in this unit (quest for justice).  Develop your answer with concrete examples and quotations from the texts of your chosen selections.

- In “The Diary of Anne Frank”, what’s the reason why the Franks are staying in the top floor of the warehouse?

** In “The Diary of Anne Frank”, Anne says that she still believes, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.  In an essay, explain why you think Anne felt this way.  Use evidence from the play to support you answer.

** In “The Diary of Anne Frank, Peter and Anne long for a place where they can be together undisturbed.  Their solution presents a problem for the adults.  In an essay, explain the problem from Anne’s and Peter’s point of view and from the point of view of the adults.

**  “The Diary of Anne Frank” ends with Mr. Frank saying about Anne “She puts me to shame.” Reflect on the plot of the play, and on what you know happens to Anne.  Write an essay to explain what Mr. Frank means by his comment.

** In each selection in this unit, one or more characters must face a difficult situation over which he or she has little control.  Choose any two of the characters and in an essay compare contrast them on the basis of the situations they face and how they deal with these situations.
