School Supplies
Thank you for sending your child to school with the necessary school supplies. In addition to the spiral notebooks posted on the supply list your child will need an additional two spiral notebooks. These notebooks will be used for specific subjects in the classroom. Also, thank you for sending the $5.00 each for the Planner and Scholastic News. Kitsap Lake PTA is also currently collecting $2.00 from each student for the Emergency Fund.
Reading
Students are studying Friendship. The stories in this unit are titled:
Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friends
Angel Child, Dragon Child
The Tree House
Rugby & Rosie
Teammates
The Legend of Damon and Pythias
I encourage you to speak with your third grade student about these stories. Ask them questions about what they're reading and how it relates to the theme Friendship.
Students should be reading at home for 10 minutes/day. Please write the title of what they read in the student planner.
Our vocabulary curriculum introduces seven vocabulary words per week. Your child will write one of these words in their planner. Please help them to write a detailed sentence in their planner using the vocabulary word!

Math
Bremerton School District has adopted an exciting new math curriculum titled Math Connects. The first chapter is focused on Place Value. Students will have math homework connected to that day's lesson on Monday-Thursday.
At this point in the school year it is expected that students have mastered the skills they learned in second grade. If your child needs extra practice there is a great web site titled Free Math Worksheets you can use to print practice worksheets.
Science
We are starting a science unit focused on the concepts of sound. Students will focus on building knowledge and developing science inquiry skills.
Scholastic News
The first issue will be expected the middle of September.
Writing
Currently we are reading aloud a story titled Riding Freedom. Students are using topics from this story to write in their writing notebooks. Ask your child about the story! Planners
We take time daily in the classroom to write in student planners and discuss homework and upcoming events. Thank you for taking the time at home to discuss with your child what's happening at home and for signing the planner nightly. This is a great place to jot me notes as needed.
