Class Information

Kindergarten:  We have been working on letter and sound recognition.  We have also started some basic blending of these sounds to create words.  We have worked with rhyme and syllables, or parts of words.  When we work with books and stories, we have reviewed parts of books and the structure of words and sentences.

First Grade: Everyday, we work with words and sounds.  We spend time with these phonetic concepts when we read and write.  We also work with reading short, non-fiction stories; applying the decoding skills that we are learning.  We are learning strategies to help read unknown words as well as understand the story.

Second Grade: In second grade, we stress the importance of reading for meaning.  We spend time each day reviewing phonetic concepts  to sharpen our decoding skills.  We also work with non-fiction stories, understanding the author's purpose, making personal connections and understanding what the story was about.  In addition, we spend time working on fluency.
