Steps of a Science Fair Project

Steps of the Science Fair Project

ü  Choose a Topic – Ask a direct simple question.

ü  Obtain a Logbook – You will need to get a one-inch three ring binder of your choice to keep track of all of your notes and activities related to your project.

ü  Research Your Topic and Write a Research Report – You are required to write a minimum two page research paper about the background knowledge that you need to understand your project. This research paper will include a bibliography.

ü  Propose a Hypothesis – Using what you learned about your project from your research, you will make a prediction about the outcome of your experiment.

ü  Materials – You will need to make a list of the materials you will need for your experiment.

ü  Plan Your Experiment (Procedure) – You will need to write down the procedure for your experiment. The procedure must be approved by Mrs. Wenz before you start.

ü  Conduct Your Experiment – You will carry out your experiment.  Here you will record careful observations and data about your experiment. Scientists do not conduct their experiments only one time. You will have to conduct your experiment three times.

ü  Check Your Conclusion – If your conclusion does not match your hypothesis that is alright. Your project is not graded on your hypothesis being supported by your data. Science does not always work out they way we think it will.

ü  Write Your Display Report – Here you will organize your project in the steps of the scientific method. You will be creating the pages of information that will be displayed on your board.

ü  Write an Abstract – Here you will write a 250 word summary of your project.

ü  Make Your Display Board – You will assemble your display board in art class. Students will purchase boards through the school.

ü  Present Your Project at the School Science Fair and to the Class – Scientists like to share their findings with others. So, like a scientist, you will present your project to the judges and to your classmates.
