Course Description:  7th Grade Life Science will give students an introduction to: Cell Biology and Genetics, Evolution and Earth’s History, Structure and Function of Living Things, and The Human Body Systems.

Materials:  Our text is “Focus on Life Science.” Students will need the regular school supplies such as paper and pencils. In addition they will need a 1” - 1 1/2 “three-ring binder for their science notebook. Occasionally additional items from home may be requested for hands on experiments.

Learning Strategies:  Students will be engaged in multiple learning styles. They will include such things as: Class lecture and discussions, reading, writing, hands on activities/ labs, partner and co-operative work and occasional projects.

Student Assessment:  Will include such items as class work/ notes, homework, science notebook, class participation, quizzes (with the occasional option of a pop quiz), tests, presentations, labs and other projects.

Homework/ Assignments:  It is expected that students will keep up with homework daily and be accounted for on the dates due.  If a student is absent due to illness or a family emergency, reasonable time will be given to make up the missed work without penalty. The rule of thumb will be 1 day absent = 1 day to make up the missed work. Daily homework should be written down by the student. Additionally I will do my best to also keep it posted on my web site so that parents can also validate what is expected. However, please keep in mind that it is possible for the internet to go down or on rare occasion I might forget to post and ultimately it is the students responsibility to get it written down. Late homework policy will be in accordance with 7th grade homework policy: 1 day late will be 10%off of earned grade. Any late work turned in after 1 day will be given 50% of earned grade till the end of the trimester. Late work cut off will be 1 week prior to grades due at the end of the semester.

   Grading:  Students will have an opportunity to earn points via: Tests, quizzes, homework, projects, science notebook, labs, classwork and other assigned work. Any late work  will be subject to point penalty. The point system will be used and converted into the traditional grading system. For example, 25 pts earned out of 30 possible = 0.8333 (83%) or a B.

Grading will be listed on Power School so that parents and students can know their most current grades. http://education.esusd.k12.ca.us/public/

The scale used will be:

A=90%-100 %    B=80%-89%    C=70%-79%    D=60%-69%   Not passing = below 60%

Lab Safety:  Appropriate lab behavior during labs will be expected at all times. If a student distracts others or violates a safety rule, they will be excluded from that lab immediately without the opportunity to make up that work.

Student Conduct:  Students are expected to respect classmates, teachers and any visitors to our class as well as their property. When a student forgets or chooses to ignore basic classroom etiquette, I will talk with them on their time (i.e. Recess) and try to resolve the behavior. If a student has repeated memory lapses in this area, additional reinforcements to encourage change such as detention or parent contact may be necessary. I encourage students to take responsibility for their actions, learn from it and move on.

Parent Contact:  Parents, please check power school and my web site to help you keep up with information on your child and life science. This will help us all to know if follow up intervention is needed before it is too late. Please feel free to call me, contact me via e mail or set up a conference as needed. However, please be respectful of class room time.
