~~~~~Grade 3~~~~~
Things to Know
On Fridays the students bring home a small book called a
"Decodable Reader" and a reading log sheet. This is due the following Friday. The students must read this story outloud at least 3 times during the next week. They can read it to a parent, sibling, grandparent, anyone who will listen, then that person signs their log. The purpose of this activity is to improve your child's reading fluency, reading rate and reading for emotion. The more they read it, the better they will become at reading outloud!
  • The students bring home their spelling homework on Monday and it is due on Friday. There is a Tutor Sheet attached to it so that you can keep track each night on how they are coming along with learning how to spell their words.
  • There is a reading comprehension test each week  that focuses on the story and skills we did that week. (on occasion if there is a short school week or a Unit Benchmark test, there would be no comprehension test.)Throughout the week the students listen to and read the story more than once and work on vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. On the day of the test we listen to/read the story again review questions and vocabulary and then take the test. The test is an open book test (except for the vocabulary) and the students are Strongly encouraged to look up answers in their book, especially on the open responses. On the open responses the students are expected to "Echo the question", answer the question and give details supporting their answer, this is expected of them on all pieces of comprehension work throughout all subjects.
  • Please check planners daily. If your child did not complete their homework or forgot it at home, a note will be left in the planner informing you of this. Missing Assignment Slips called "Howlers" (from Harry Potter) are being implemented. The students will fill out the slip and bring it home to be signed by a parent. The assignment should be brought in the next day and given to Mrs. Rollo. If a student misses 3 homework assignments they will stay in for recess.
    •
  • At the beginning of each day, the students start off with their clip on "Ready to Learn". The students have the opportunity to move their "clips" either up for good behavior or down for behavior that is not acceptable. Students usually receive warnings before they have to move their clip (unless it is absolutely inappropriate behavior, then the clip will be moved automatically). The first stop is "Think About It", if the student breaks another rule, they move to "Teacher's Choice" where it is up to the teacher to decide the appropriate consequence for the behavior. If the student's clip is moved down again, this time it is into "Parent Contact" and either a note will be sent home or a phone call will be made. Students can clip BACK UP after they have clipped down when they show they have improved their behavior, once a Teacher's Choice or Parent Contact has been hit, those consequences are still in place but the student CAN move their clip up if it has been earned.
               Specials
    Each special has a curriculum of their own that needs to be followed. The specialists and classroom teacher meet so that the third grade classroom curriculum is integrated with the curriculum of the special, that way your student gets more out of their learning.
