FYI - Important Information

For Your Information
The information below is designed to help answer any
questions that may arise throughout the year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need
any further clarification.

SCHOOL HOURS School starts at 8:10.  Students may not be dropped off before 8:00 because there is no supervision.  Likewise, it is important that children leave school promptly.  Dismissal is at 2:05 except on Wednesdays and modified days.  Dismissal is at 1:15 on those days.  For safety reasons, they may not play on the equipment after school.

ATTENDANCE If your child is late to school, your child must stop by the office to sign in so he/she is not marked absent for the day.  Your child will receive an attendance slip to readmit him/her to class.  If your child is absent, please call school to notify us and send a note with your child when he/she returns.  The school absence line is 936-6201.  If you are going to be gone from school for an extended time, we will set up an Independent Study Contract for your child.  Please notify the school before you leave so this can be arranged.

SNACK/LUNCH There is time during morning recess for the children to eat a snack.  They are generally hungry and a small, nutritious snack will help them perform better in school.   Children may bring lunch or buy it at school for $3.25.   Milk is $.75.  If you want 2 pieces of pizza, you need to buy 2 lunches now. Popsicles will be sold after school on Wednesdays for $1.00.  Money can be deposited into your child’s account to make it easier for all.  Please send money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on the check.

SUPPLIES   Please label and bring all supplies to school.  You should have similar supplies at home for homework.  Supplies at school will need to be replenished at times during the year.  Please put your name on anything your child brings to school.  There is a Lost and Found in the school office if something is missing.  Only supplies on the grade level list should be brought to school.  Toys and inappropriate items will be confiscated.

HOMEWORK The purpose of homework is to practice and reinforce concepts learned at school.  Homework can develop concentration, independent work habits, organizational skills, and self-discipline.   Set up a time and place with appropriate materials so your child can successfully complete his/her homework.  Encourage your child to use good study habits and do neat work.  A minimum of 40 minutes should be spent on homework each night.  This includes reading, literature log, and practicing math facts.

EAGLE READING PROGRAM   We have a school wide reading incentive program.  Children should read every night.  These pages should be recorded in their “Eagle Reading Folder”.  Folders should be turned in weekly, as directed by the classroom teacher.  The totals are used to earn certificates at the end of the school year.  Students can earn a free pizza through the “Book It” program.

MATH FACTS This year your child needs to master addition and subtraction facts to 20 since this is an essential second grade math standard.   There will be regular tests at school to show progress.

THURSDAY CONDUIT ENVELOPES Important notes and completed work will go home in your child’s yellow conduit envelope on Thursday.  We want to keep you informed of your child’s progress on a weekly basis.  Please review your child’s work, sign and return the envelope on Friday.

BOOK ORDERS   Book orders will be sent home about once a month.  The books are generally good buys, age appropriate, and motivating.  Your purchase allows us to build our classroom library.  This is a great opportunity to encourage your child to read!   If you wish to purchase books, please complete the order form and send a check made out to the book club.

SCHOOL REWARDS AND VALUES- The school focuses on a value each year.  We will be focusing on it so students will understand what it means.  There will be a school wide reward system for those seen displaying the value.  Gotcha Cards will be given out by all staff members for good behavior.  Cards will be put in a special mailbox.  Random drawings will take place and students can get rewards if their card is drawn.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES- Parent teacher conferences will be the week of October 27 – October 31.  There will be minimum days all week and no students on Friday.  This is the only week for formal conferences.  Other conferences can be planned as needed.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS    Your help is encouraged and appreciated either on a regular or occasional basis.  Children are so proud to have their parents help out in the classroom. If you have a grandparent that is interested in helping, they are welcome, as well.  If you would like to help in any way, let us know.  Volunteers need to sign in at the office before coming to the classroom.  Thanks for any help you can give!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK Each child will have the opportunity to be the special person in the classroom for a week.  Your child will be able to bring in pictures and important items.  You will be notified and given specific directions.

MEDICATIONS Medication may only be given out at school with instructions from the doctor.  The medications and doctor note must be submitted to the office. The medication and instructions from the doctor will be kept in the nurse’s office. Your child will be called up to the office to be given the medication as prescribed by the doctor.

FIELD TRIPS Field trips are arranged during the year and align with units of study.   A field trip permission slip must be filled out in order for your child to attend.  Notices will be sent home before each field trip to provide specific information and costs.
