Small Groups

     Peer teaching and interactions often help students gain valuable skills and insights into their behaviors. I work with small groups of 3-6 students with similiar "problems" or experiences. The students work together to offer each other support and learn skills to deal with specific issues. Activities are designed to help each group member better understand their situation and acquire new skills. Participants are selected by the counselor and may also be referred by teachers and parents. Parent permission is required to participate in small group counseling sessions. Group topics are based on the needs of the students and typically include:

  • separation anxiety (Kindergarten students only);
  • social skills;
  • anger management;
  • organization;
  • academic success;
  • worry and anxiety;
  • stress;
  • friendship;
  • self-esteem;
  • divorce and parent separation;
  • grief and loss;
  • homelessness and transient situations;
  • transition to middle school (5th grade only); and
  • other small groups as needed.
