Students can walk-in and speak with me or self-refer by leaving me a note. Additionally, students are referred by parents, teachers, and principals.
Typically the problems addressed are interfering with student learning or affecting his/her school relationships. When working with students I employ a variety of counseling techniques and will choose the most appropriate method to meet the individual student’s needs. Students may work with me without parent permission.
I meet with students for a variety of different issues. The length of time that we work together varies based on the topic and the age and maturity level of the student. Although many problems can be solved in 1-2 sessions, the maximum number of times I meet with a student for the same issue is six. If a student is consistently requesting to speak with me regarding the same issue, I will contact the parents.
School counselors frequently deal with confidential matters and private issues. School Counselors, Psychologists, Nurses, and Social Workers have a high duty of confidentiality to students and parents. Counseling relationships are confidential in nature, so I will not disclose information without consent unless there is a suspicion of a danger to self or others, it has been court ordered, or I have received permission from the student or family members.
