Counseling Program

     The school counseling program at Wilburn Year Round Elementary School is led by the school counselor, Mrs. Amy Lockhart. A school counselor is a certified professional who is trained at the graduate level in counseling and consulting practices and has in depth knowledge of human development, helping relationships, social/cultural foundations, group processes, testing and assessment, career development, and the school setting. Within WCPSS, the mission of the school counselor is to provide a comprehensive continuum of support services that positively impacts the personal, academic, and career development of the whole child within the school, family, and the community.

    Whether there are academic, social, or emotional concerns, the role of the school counselor is to help children move forward in a positive direction so that they can be more successful in school. A comprehensive counseling program addresses the following areas: academic needs, personal problems, social skills, and career development. Through educational classroom lessons, skill-building small group counseling sessions, and short-term individual counseling sessions students learn how to:

  • name and identify feelings;
  • understand needs vs wants;
  • make and keep friends;
  • problem solve and explore potential solutions;
  • organize academic materials;
  • appropriately manage anger;
  • develop social skills; and
  • strive to reach their full potential.

   When you are at Wilburn, please stop in and introduce yourself. The Counseling Office is located just across the hallway from the main School Office. I work with all of the students in the school, and always enjoy meeting their parents. By the way look for the lock and the heart to find me throughout the school.
