The Revamped AR Program

As some of you may already know, Burnett has revamped the AR Program and it is better than ever.  It is easier for students to find books that are at their level and the way the program is being monitored students will be more successful at passing and improving their reading comprehension.  Please read the following question and answer section below for a quick overview on how to help your child succeed with reading comprehension.

Q:  How do I find an AR book at my reading level?

A:  Go to this link AR Book Finder

Under the advance search tab, type in your child's AR level where it asks for the ATOS Book Level.  If students are not on my "Watch List" (struggling readers) you can type in their AR range.

For example: 4.2 through 5.7.

If students are on my Watch List, they are required to start at the lower end of their range.  Therefore just type in the lowest level of the range through the lowest level of the range.

For example: 2.2 through 2.2.

There is also a drop down menu to be able to find book with a particular topic.  Click GO and you will see a listing of several books at your child's AR level.  If you find a book that you are interested in purchasing or renting at the library, click on ADD TO AR BOOK BAG and it will add it to your favorites to be printed out.  Students have also been taught how to use the AR website in the LRC.

Q:  How does Mrs. Johnson's "Watch List" work?

A:  Students that have an AR level range below a fourth grade level are required to have their independent reading monitored by Mrs. Johnson.  This means that those students will start at the lowest end of their range, read a book at that level and then take the AR test.  If they receive a 90% or 100% on that AR test they can move to their next AR level.  If they receive an 80% on that test this shows that the AR book is right at their level, therefore they will have to read another AR book at that same level until they pass the AR test with a 90% or 100%.  Students progress is monitored on their AR folder located in the classroom.  Think of it like a video game, to go on to the next level you must first successfully pass the level that you are on.  It only makes sense!  :)

Q:  Why is this AR system better than last year?

A:  The way the old AR system worked was that students would just pick any book to read within their AR range, not pass a test and continue to make the same mistake over and over.  With students reading AR books at their level they will succeed on test and this will improve their comprehension.

Q:  What if I am a struggling reader?

A:  You should be actively reading a minimum of 30 minutes a day (outside of school) at your current AR level.  Follow this and you will see improvements!  Consistently reading each day will help you improve your comprehension (raising your AR level) and succeed with class work.  Many students struggle with reading comprehension, but you don't have to.  Take control of your reading and become an active reader!
