What You Can Do to Help Your Child be Successful in Fourth Grade:

2 Important things that make the biggest difference!

 1.    CHECK HOMEWORK-Be sure your child is completing their homework every night.  I don't give that much homework, an average night will have two assignments focusing on Langauge Arts and Math, therefore the homework assignments I do give need to be a priority in order to practice what students learned for that day at home.

2.    MULTIPLICATION FACTS-In third grade students mastered their multiplication facts.  In fourth grade the focus for multiplication facts is on speed and accuracy.  Soon we will get into math chapters that focus on 2-digit and 3-digit multiplication, along with long division and if students can't recall facts quickly and accuratly, this will hold them back from learning 2-digit, 3-digit, and long division skills.

Look at your cooking box tops to see if they have this label.

If so, cut the label out and bring it to school.  We are collecting box tops to help raise money for our school.  Box Top donates 10 cents to our school for each one that is brought in.  Every little bit helps!  To learn more about the Box Top Education Program please go to their website:Box Top Education

Mom's Homeroom is an online resource packed with tips and tools to help your child succeed with school.  The online videos are very helpful!

Wednesday's Test Packets-

As I'm sure you're aware, every Wednesday, students take home their test/quiz/assignment packet (graded work) that is to be signed by a parent and returned the next day.  It is extremely important that these packets get signed and returned the very next day to keep the lines of communication open at all times.

The purpose of these test packets is to review over how your child did on recent test, quizzes and assignments to help them with future class work.  Everything we learn in class is revisited and skills are also built on previous learned skills.  It is highly recommended and beneficial for students to review over concepts that they did incorrectly to improve.

Studying Skills to Help Students Succeed-

For students to succeed on tests they must learn how to study effectively.  In order for students to fully comprehend material they have to be able to READ IT, WRITE IT, SAY IT AND HEAR IT.  Students must independently read the content, write the content, say the content and hear themselves saying the content.

EFFECTIVE STUDYING STRATEGIES

1.  If a study guide is provided, fill in the answers to the study guide.

2.  Make flashcards for studying vocabulary or events and important dates.

3.  Make up your own quiz or test based on your notes and have a friend, parent or sibling test you.

4.  Make an outline of just the main ideas.

5.  Make a timeline of important dates or the order of events.

Good Study Skills:

ü     Repetition is key! Read and reread your notes and the relevant chapters in the textbook.

ü    Study in a place that is free of distractions. Have ready all the things you will need, such as paper and pens.

ü   While you are reviewing your notes, cover them up periodically and summarize them out loud. Pretend that you are explaining the material to someone else.

ü    Study at a time when you are alert and not hungry or sleepy.

ü   Don't wait until the last minute to study
