Welcome to Mrs. Harrison's Website. Below you will find some of the important concepts we'll be studying in 7th Grade. Also, I try to have the week's homework assignments posted by Monday afternoon. Be sure to check it if there is any question about what a child should be completing for class.

Integer Rules
Adding Integers The sum of 2 positives is positive. The sum of 2 negatives is negative. Example: -3 + -4 = -7 To add 2 integers with different signs, find the DIFFERENCE of their absolute values. The sum has the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value. Example: -6 + 4 = -2 (6-4=2. There were more negatives when you started, so the answer is negative.)
Subtracting Integers To subtract an integer, add its opposite. Example: - 4 - (-6) = +2 (change to -4 + (+6) then follow rules for adding integers)
Multiplying Integers The product of 2 integers with the same sign is positive. Example: -6 x -3 = +18 The product of 2 integers with opposite signs is negative. Example: +4 x (-2) = -8
Dividing Integers The quotient of 2 integers with the same sign is positive. Example: -35 divided by -7 = +5 The quotient of 2 integers with opposite signs is negative. Example: -16 divided by +2 = -8 |

To solve an equation for x, do the INVERSE operation of the term that is on the same side of the equal sign as the x. This inverse number must be done on BOTH sides of the equation.
ex. x-8 = -2 x - 8 +8 = -2 +8 x = 6
To solve a 2-step equation, first do the inverse of the constant term, THEN do the inverse of variable term.
ex. 3x + 4 = 16 3x + 4 + (-4) = 16 + (-4) 3x = 12 3x (divided by 3) = 12 (divided by 3) x = 4 |

A SEQUENCE is a set of numbers that follows a pattern. Each number in a sequence is called a TERM. Two types of sequences are Arithmetic Sequences & Geometric Sequences. An Arithmetic Sequence is found by adding a fixed number to the previous term (the number might be negative). A Geometric Sequence is found by multiplying the previous term by a fixed number (the number might be a fraction). |

To add polynomials, add the coefficients of the like terms. ex. (3x + 4) + (-5x + 2) = (3+ -5)x + (4 + 2) = -2x + 6
To subtract polynomials, keep the first polynomial, but negate each term of the second polynomial, then combine. ex. (3x + 4) - (-5x + 2) = (3x + 4) -(-5x) -(2) = 3x + 4 +5x -2 = 8x + 2 |
