Math

Week of: January 9, 2012
Unit: Measuring Length, Perimeter, and Area

Key Understandings:

Linear measurement tools can be used to estimate and measure length.
Standard units can be used to find the perimeter of a shape.
Concrete and pictorial models of square units can be used to determine the area of two-dimensional surfaces.
Guiding Questions:
Why is it important to estimate before measuring?
How can estimation be useful in real-world activities?
What is the relationship between a measurement tool and the object being measured?
What are the tools of linear mesurement?
How do you determine the correct measurement tool to use?
How can you use standard units to find the perimeter of a shape?
How is area measured?

 Monday

In small groups, students will model standard units of measurement.

Students will complete a vocabulary flip book in their Math journals.

Reflection: Why is it important to estimate before measuring?

 Tuesday

Students will determine the length of various line segments using standard units of measurement. starting at 0 and at other points on a ruler.

Reflection: How can estimation be useful in real-world activities?

 Wednesday

In small groups, students will model metric units of measurement.

Students will complete a vocabulary flip book in their Math journals.

Reflection: What is the relationship between a measurement tool and the object being measured?  How do you determine the correct measurement tool to use?
