  • Welcome Future Kindergarteners!
Check out the Forms and Documents to find information about our curriculum, a Kindergarten supply list, and last year's Kindergarten Handbook.

I am looking forward to next year. I am excitedly making science plans for this coming year. Get ready to learn about electricity using playdough! We may even have the opportunity to get to know some real scientists.

We will learn how to read and how to write our own books!

Keep your eye out for interesting treasures that you find outside during the summer. I will be doing the same while I hike through the woods and beaches in Maine, and while I am working in my gardens this summer. I hope you have a fun summer and come to school excited to learn. We are in for a busy and exciting school year. I can't wait to get to know you!

  • We love Antarctica!!!
We have spent quite a lot of time learning about Antarctica with the help of Dr. Furse and her students (engineers) from the University of Utah. Our trusty mascot, Russell the Ram got to go with the scientists to Antarctica. While he was gone, we tracked the weather at McMurdo and compared it to our weather here in Kansas. We had 1 day when Kansas had colder temperatures than Antarctica! The kids learned about penguins, sea ice, snow cats ("catmobiles"), coring, and historical scientists that visited Antarctica with ponies. They learned about the specially colored flags that are used to designate trails on the ice, and especially loved finding the answer to their biggest question, "What do penguins sound like?" We skyped with Dr. Furse before she went to Antarctica. She told us about the special clothing that she would wear to protect her body from the harsh, icy climate. The Kindergarteners enjoyed learning about how blubber keeps animals warm, especially the sleepy seal that the scientists found taking a nap on the ice. The scientists studied the electrical properties and chrystalography of sea ice. The Kindergarteners observed the differences between sea ice and fresh water ice, especially when the ice melted.

When Russell returned to our class, we got to see all of his adventures in the pictures. Please check out the link to see the neat things the Kindergarteners enjoyed in class. We skyped with Dr. Furse and David Lubbers when they returned back to the University of Utah and were very excited to learn that they are planning a trip to study the sea ice in the Arctic. We heard that a special polar bear hunter will be needed to go with the scientists on that expedition so we have already learned about polar bears and how amazing they are. Russell the Ram is looking forward to traveling to Alaska to check out the Arctic in May!

The Kindergarteners have learned so much about Antarctica it has clearly been one of their favorite writing subjects. They would like it if I let them write about it every day! Thank you Dr. Furse for taking us along with you to Antarctica. We love Antarctica!!!
