Summer Reading Assignment

Where The Red Fern Grows

BOOK: Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls, tells the exciting story of 10 year old Billy living in the Ozark Mountains during the Great Depression.  After saving for 2 years, Billy earns enough money to buy two hound pups, Old Dan & Little Ann.  Together Billy and these two hounds have many adventures and learn many lessons about the joys and sorrows of life.

ASSIGNMENT:Over the summer read Where the Red Fern Grows and write a journal entry for every chapter discussing your thoughts, feelings, predictions and/or questions about the story.  There are 20 chapters in the book so you must have 20 journal entries.  You should read for at least 30 minutes a day and you must write in complete sentences.  Here are some ideas that will help you with your journal entries.  You can use these same writing prompts every time you write to help you get your own thoughts on paper.
  • What do you think of the main character, Billy?
  • How does this chapter make you feel?
  • What does this chapter remind you of?  Did you see a movie, hear a song, read another book or experience something on your own that reminds you of the book?
  • What do you think is going to happen in the next chapter?
  • What are you confused about?
Note: You may also choose 3 chapters to draw a picture of what happened rather than write.

When you have finished the book, tell me how you feel about the whole story.  What did you learn? How did it make you feel and why? Would you recommend the book to a friend? Why?  Also, please list 10 words from the book that you were unfamiliar with.

MATERIALS:
  • A copy of Where the Red Fern Grows.
  • A spiral notebook for your journal entries.  This is a seperate spiral notebook from the one you will be using in class.
Please write neatly and take your time.  Think about what you are writing before you put it on the paper.

DUE DATE: Your journal is due the first day of school, Wednesday Sep. 3rd and is worth 50 points.  Late journals will only receive half credit and will only be accepted one day late.
