Unit 2 - Earthquakes & Volcanoes!
 
  • Students will study the impact plate tectonics has on earthquakes and volcanoes.
  • Students will study the damge caused by both of these natural disasters.
  • Students will create model volcanoes and hve them erupt at school.
  • Students will learn and understand vocabulary in relation to these two natural disasters.
 
Unit 1 - Mapping The Earth's Surface
 
Lesson 1: Reading Maps
  • Students will understand  vocabulry for reading maps.
  • Let's walk! - Students will become scientific observers of their school through a silent science walk around campus.  Students will take notes and make illustrations in their science logs detailing the look, feel and sound of their school environment.  A class discussion will follow.
  • In groups, students draw a map of their school from an over-head view.  All buildings, paths, playgrounds, open spaces, etc. must be included.  The map must also include a map legend/key and must be colored.
  • Students present their maps to the class.
  • Students will draw a detailed map of their bedroom including length and width measurements.  Doors and windows must be included.
  • Students learn about Latitude and Longitude, map view and map scale
  • Students make a map of the classroom and bring it down to "scale"
Lesson 2:  Topographic, Geological Maps and Landforms - THE GRAND CANYON
  • Students will understand vocabulary for topographic and geological maps
  • Students will understand map symbols
  • Students will understand geological formations in a geological map
  •  Students will understand how landscape changes over time.
  • Students will begin studying the Grand Canyon and its geology

LAB:  Students will conduct a lab where they will identify rock samples from the Grand Canyon.

Lesson 3:  Rocks of the Earth
  • Students will know and understand The Rock Cycle
  • Students will know the layers of the Earth

LAB:  Students will create models showing all of the layers of the Earth

 
EXAM: 11/4/08
 
Lesson 4:  Plate Tectonics
  • Students will learn and understand Continental Drift
  • Students will understand Seafloor Spreading and discover it's connection to Continental Drift
  • Students will learn the Theaory of Plate Techtonics

LAB:  Students will cut the peels off of oranges in different shapes as though they were the plates of the Earth.  They will then exchange oranges with another student to try to place the pieces back together.
