I teach a number of classes each school year. These include U.S. History 3 and 4, U.S. Government, 21st Century Geography and World History, Constitutional and Criminal Law, Consumer Economics, and Geography. Depending on the course you might use them to fulfill requirements for graduation or electives.
How can you succeed in my classes?
It is easy to succeed in my classes - including U.S. Government.
The best way to get hold of me when you need to is via e-mail. Below is a link to my e-mail.
Or,you can check to see if updates have been posted as attachments to this site:
You can get to this site by Going to www.d11.org/doherty Clicking on the "Departments and Staff" TAB; clicking on "Night School"; then clicking on my picture.
Extra Credit
I no longer allow extra credit work. Please, do not even ask me about it. If you keep up with the work we do in class, you shouldn't have any problems.
Make Up Assignments
If you miss class, you will have to write a 1 page essay for every period you miss (4 periods per night {4:00-5:00; 5:00-6:30; 7:10-8:00; and 8:00-9:45}). So if you are absent for 1 full night, you will need to write four 1 page essays, selecting from the topics provided.
As easy as it is to pass my course if you attend class and do the work, it is nearly impossible to pass the course if you are absent and do not make up the work.
Cell Phones MP3s and IPODs
Cell Phones, MP3s and IPODs are a constant problem in the classroom. I have struggled with the best way to handle this problem and this is my solution: 1st Infraction: Loss of the opportunity to earn the day's participation points (100); 2nd and subsequent infraction(s): Choice of Depositing phone or Music device in "Phone Box" until either 6:30 p.m. or 9:45 p.m. (whichever comes first) or a referral.
More often than not we have fun and that is what I am looking forward to. So, LET'S GET STARTED! CONSTITUTIONAL AND CRIMINAL LAW (SS.CNCRLAW)
This course is designed to explore the constitutional foundations and structure of the federal and state legal systems. Key concepts include the first ten amendments and individual rights, law enforcement, judicial systems, civil and criminal law, and balancing rights with responsibilities..[1]
In this class we use a text book called Street Law. My objective is to give you the opportunity to learn your rights as citizens of the United States and perhaps gain an understanding of what those rights mean and where they came from. Anyway, give it a chance. If you allow yourself, you may have some fun, learn something, and become a better citizen.
Best of all, we will hold a "Mock Trial" near the end of class. Two students will role play attorneys representing their clients. Two students will role play the clients, two witnesses, one bailiff. Students from another class will be sworn in as jurors and we will conduct a trial. FUN! FUN! FUN!
