MM 325 Week #8

NO FORMAL LECTURE...

Attendance NOT taken

Things to consider for informal lecture time

  1. Discuss your major wp project with MrM
  2. Do a trial simulation for mid-term assessment for Tuesday
  3. Ask for help with your WordPress
  4. Anything else Mr. M. can assist you with

NEXT WEEK:
Mr. M. will make suggestions re: how you can make your Resume STAND OUT in a stack of resume - based
on assignments you do (and more importantly the EXTRA time you put in)
- this will be of interest to designers, 3D, 2D, video and of course programmers.

MR. M will be in lecture...
   why not discuss your ideas for Major WP with him

Mr. M> will go to lab... afterward...

why not practise for midterm assessment
or
ask him any WordPress or other MM related questions.

This will be an informal lecture

SEE PLAN OF ATTACK - for weeks ahead, and when attendance will be taken.

thanks
MrM

Lab  - MID TERM ASSESSMENT

???
Rob, be sure to make it challenging.

Should be easy and quick to get 60 - 70%

Make it tough to get >85%

IDEAS:
- have them do the BASE QUIZ... TIME THAT reward for those that do it quickly..
- this will be out of say 80%
- make it easy to tell if they did it
- ie have a SINGLE page, with plugins all on it

THEN>..
- have, once time has been recorded..
they may ATTEMPT the BONUS...
for >80%

Find something that is HIDDEN, or only found by research, and not by just playing with plugins etc.
or find a TOUGH plugin...

OR something that needs coding - but make sure instructions are good.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Oct. 18 upgraded its Google Docs presentations capabilities, adding real-time collaboration capabilities and more than 50 other new features to better compete with Microsoft Office Web Apps and other tools.

...
The new presentations are long overdue, coming more than a year and half after Google launched new document, spreadsheet and drawing editors. The Docs editor employs a new JavaScript layout engine and leans heavily on HTML5 to boost speed.

If approved: Mr. M. will gradually be changing Lecture time on Fridays to more LAB time:

COPY of Sunday's Email to Dean:

From: "mccormac (Rob Mccormack)" <xxx@confederationc.on.ca>
Date: October 16, 2011 10:09:49 AM EDT
To: "(Pattie )" <xxx@confederationc.on.ca>
Cc: Dean Murdock  --"kelement (Kevin xxx)" <xxx@confederationc.on.ca>
Subject: Room Change MM 325, Friday - BOOK Lecture and LAB for 1 hour

Gail / Kevin:
FYI only
no action required
   just giving my students a variety of lab/lecture time late on Fridays.
        Thanks,
                  R.

Pattie:

On Friday's I have a 1 hour lecture with ALL my 2nd year students:

Fridays
3:30pm - 4:30pm
MM 325-SHU C216

I believe our MAC lab is also available at:
Fridays:
3:30pm - 4:30pm
SHU B116B

Request:
I would like to KEEP Room C216, but
ALSO BOOK the Lab
3:30pm - 4:30pm
SHU B116B

Reason:
As semesters progress, I see a need for MORE lab work, and LESS lecture time..
    If I have BOTH rooms booked, I can vary the lecture/lab time to benefit students.

I do find Fridays late, a less than ideal time to hear someone just talk and demo about Server Side Programming...
and I think most students agree....
so some lab time would be an improvement all around.

Also, we want
to have one major (portfolio-worthy) project, which will DEMAND more lab time by Dec. - now we are working on
just mini-assignments.

Note:
(I do know the lab is smaller, but I can work with that easily)

Thanks, hope this is OK.

Rob

What is a database... use Google Forms to catalog/organize 5 fields...
We may use this for later assignment.. ie create a dtabase in mySQL

- review the Google Form submitted, did everyone follow instructions?

- Creating your OWN database using Google FORMS
- write down a some data YOU want to gather, Mr. M. to do on board
- create a google form
- enter in via the form 3 times
- look at spreadsheet
IS THIS A DATABASE
What features does it lack?
Is this the type of TABLE that WordPress uses?

Database: datWordPressMrM
Table:  wp_users  (and MANY more tables too - all in the WordPress database called datWordPressMrM)

Hey Thanks...

.  I think Smultron is STILL free... it is OPEN SOURCE...

. You are seeing many FREE apps in App Store...
    It seems people are willing to pay for "convenience" and easy updating of apps..
  (I am a Apple Developer now, hoping to sell on App store soon)

. Let me know if I am wrong on Smultron

. and YES, I used Komodo Edit for a year or more...
    I really liked how it handles Python...
      I did all my coding when I was involved in this Python Framework

. I will post your links... thanks

As I am sure you both are aware, Smultron has been a good program for web development on a budget, considering when you showed it to us last year it was freeware. You might be both aware of this by now, but as of Smultron 4, it is no longer a free product. It costs 4.99 on the app store for Apple, so I figured I would let you both know that if you continue to recommend it to students recommend version 3.0.1 because it is still free and has tabs which Smultron 4 does not support.

As for new recommendations I give you these:

What can we learn from Pixar? Too Early to think about your Portfolio?

You portfolio, far more than your grades, or good looks ;) - will help you find work.

Time to Polish

Mr. M. can say it over and over... but maybe when it comes from Pixar, more will pay attention.

From PIXAR!

Take the time to polish.

It seems silly, but people get in such a rush to get the reel out the door, they lose sight of the big picture. THIS IS HOW YOU WILL GET A JOB. And since it's a job in a visual industry -- it should LOOK really, really good.

Don't use clashing colors. Make sure your shaders are anti-aliased.

Make sure your lights aren't blown out too bright.

Make it clear what we're looking at. Don't use confusing fonts.

 Keep it clean and simple!

Dangerous of NOT knowing enough PHP

Scenerio
OK...
So you spend 6 weeks learning to make a form that will email.
You are very proud of it
Mr. M. gave you 7.99/8.00
You MOM tried it and your best friend Bill.

You want to use that form for all your clients, while you work as a freelancer...

Sounds good...
Sounds like what we should be teaching in MM 352, it is Server Side programming after all.

TO MR. M. it sounds terrible...

If it were 11 years ago, Mr. M. did spend 6 weeks with students, slugging through this...
That is the way we did it, that is the way industry did it...

and even today, you will find people doing it that way...
   and you can't convince them even to consider  Open Source Software..
     "cause they say:  oh that is for small stuff", or
        I never use Open Source
         or
         I prefer to learn it myselfe

But in a modern Open Source, framework world..
you wasted your time.

Your form may well have opened up a SECURITY risk that could take down your server.
You only tried it with 3 people.

Mr. M. prefers things tested with MILLIONS of peoples..
  programmed by the best community and programmers in the world.

SO... it could take you 3-12 hours to learn this new way... but that is a bargain..
PLUS: you will havethe skills in DEMAND today.

Is server side programming dangerous?

Yes... it can be...

http://www.html-form-guide.com/php-form/php-form-action-self.html

All the more reason to rely on Open source, WordPress, Blogger etc.

OR... write it yourself, and risk destruction of your server....

Consider - buildingyour own database in
GOogle Forms...

then build it in mySQL  -- maybe do this in winter rob...

How about, just do your best to complete all tasks and UNDERSTAND things,
   no assignment assigned this week, no test next week.

Mr. M. is thinking about a Quiz or Hands-on Test... maybe in TWO weeks...

We have so little time in lab... it is hard to take TWO labs for testing/assessment...
     and take away TWO labs from learning labs....

Maybe a hand-on test might be the best way of you demonstrating your knowledge....

How fast you can do this will have a bearing on your mark.

Mr. M. would be quite delighted if most or all of the students could do this after only maybe 7 weeks,
 or like 20 hours of this course. and you will be well prepared to start on WordPress and other Open Source exciting and profitable solutions.

If you don't know that you MUST run this under MAMP or XAMP, then you will fail the test
 - you could get  a few marks for the HTML page, that is all.

Review from Last Week

Review from Lab...

Note 3 letter prefixes.... DO THIS FOR SURE, or you will be wasting time.... and get mixed up. dat for database, tab for table.

WHich of these were are Database, and which was our TABLE ?

  1. Addresses
  2. AddressBook

QUIZ:  OK....

Which of these are found in ROWS, and which are COLUMN names ?

Actually a very important thing to KNOW...

  1. FirstName
  2. Joe
  3. LastName
  4. Smith
  5. joesmith.jpg

What was Mr. M. saying about ecommerce and shopping carts

1- from a business standpoint, try selling on ebay, ebay stores, yahoo stores FIRST

Then...
Use a service like 2checkout.com - or many others

Then.... if needed
get a account with PSIGate.com etc.

Recommendation
x-cart (Open Source shopping cart) - is a lot of trouble, risk, SSL certificate, updating.... and unless you are doing this on a very regular basis, and have the 100's of hours to be a bit of an expert, don't use it.

General Comment - Are we making progress in MM 325

We are moving forward nicely

Mr. M. only hope is that the PACE is OK, and you are taking the time to really learn stuff.

You will have a pretty amazing WordPress site by Christmas...

Student R&D Department

Thanks Brandon...

Brandon asked if there was any way that he could just enter in the names to match...
Mr. M. thought so...
A 10 minute search by Brandon and Mr. M. yielded the answer..

More time taken to study the example....

The KEY was to use an ARRAY in PHP..
ref:
http://php.net/manual/en/function.in-array.php

And PRESTO!
Brandon had this code...
one week later... a single strtoupper() shortened the code EVEN more.

KNOW THIS FOR THE Quiz/Assessment - it could save  you a ton of time and headaches.

Imagine the efforts and number of conditional, if, else if, switch statement needed to replace this elegant way of doing this

case "Wayne Manor":

// $villian is an array holding all caps of the possible choices

$villian = array("JOKER", "THE JOKER", "RIDDLER","THE RIDDLER");

// Ask if the $Name (whatever the user fill in) is contained in the array $villian

if (in_array(strtoupper($Name), $villian))
{

    echo "<img src='images/arkham.jpg' />";

} else {

    echo "<img src='images/WayneManor.jpg' />";

}
  // end if

break;

PHP Emulators Online

Could this SAVE you some time?

Mr. M. found this in the summer of 2010

Try it with this code:
http://writecodeonline.com/php/

ONE Fun with Dates....
Get used to going to the manual:
http://php.net/manual/en/function.date.php

// Prints something like: Monday
echo date("l");

// Prints something like: Monday 8th of August 2005 03:12:46 PM
echo date('l jS \of F Y h:i:s A');

// Prints: July 1, 2000 is on a Saturday

echo "July 1, 2000 is on a " . date("l", mktime(0, 0, 0, 7, 1, 2000));

echo date("Y");

Mr. M. do the (c) trick... (c) 2010 Confederation College.

TWO - From Batman example

//$Name comes from the .html form
$Name="THE JOKER";

$villian = array("JOKER", "THE JOKER", "RIDDLER","THE RIDDLER");

// Ask if the $Name (whatever the user fill in) is contained in the array $villian

if (in_array(strtoupper($Name), $villian))
{
    echo "<img src='http://www.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/uploads/12499/arkham_asylum_topper.jpg' />";

} else {
    echo "<img src='http://www.dedroidify.com/blogimages/batmanbegins03.jpg' />";

}  // end if

THREE  - PHP Tip of the Month

Do you think this will work?
Reference:
http://articles.sitepoint.com/article/quick-php-tips

$day="Tuesday";
$month="November";

echo "Today is the FRIST $day of $month";

FOUR - Open and Close PHP tags

In and out of PHP before they even knew what hit 'em

When embedding PHP within HTML, you can close your PHP tag whenever you want to output HTML. This enables speedier processing of your PHP. For instance:

Try this in emulator:

12 Years AGO, Mr. M. thought this was REALLY strange... but now he sees the POWER and ELEGANCE that PHP offers.

Take a moment to understand it.

You may think you have to

if($Name=="batman")

echo "Stuff.....";
echo "Stuff.....";
echo "Stuff.....";
echo "Stuff.....";
}

Which you could do... but that is SLOW and hard to read... Recall all those " and ' and . in PHP make it very hard to understand..

There is a BETTER WAY!

This is meant to RUN in the emulator - which has opening and closing tags built-in.

$Name="batman";

if($Name=="batman")
{  // open the if statement
?>

<div class='neighbor'>
<strong>Welcome Bruce Wayne</strong>
</div>

<?php
}  // close the if statement
else
?>

<div class='russian'>
<i>You are not Bruce </i>
</div>

<?php
}  // close the if statement

PHP Tip of the Semester

echo() also has a shortcut syntax, where you can immediately follow the opening tag with an equals sign. This short syntax only works with the

short_open_tag configuration setting enabled.

These are the SAME!!! - long and short form.

<?php echo $Name; ?>

<?=$Name
?>

Final Comment on POST and GET

Search for something on freesound.org.
find it and email the search to someone..
Does it work?

http://www.freesound.org/searchText.php

Student Question:

During Mr. M. demo... Kevin... asked a question.

Kevin R.
Thanks for question on what is isam...

Mr. M. said, he has used that for years... 15 years.. he heard of it back in MS Access days.
He thought it was some kind of an engine thing for mySQL

Update:
Mr. M had the same vague recollection about e InnoDB engine - which was found in Delphi (Pascal) - readplease is written in Delphi

Research
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyISAM
MyISAM is the default storage engine for the MySQL relational database management system versions prior to 5.5 [1]. It is based on the older ISAM code but has many useful extensions. The major deficiency of MyISAM is the absence of transactions support. Versions of MySQL 5.5 and greater have switched to the InnoDB engine to ensure referential integrity constraints, and higher concurrency.

Writing out your Database (created in PHPMyAdmin) to a web page.

You will do this with your OWN database next lab, and it will be PART of the assignment.

Can we just study it today in lecture.

A quick Word About Open Source

First, one notable thing...

There is SOME but not a lot of Open Source for products from Adobe and Microsoft

Why do you think that is?

There is enough though,
        to make really difficult tasks easy.

How about from scratch... months/years?

Advantage of Open Source Libraries and Templates...
now days, other than perhaps a good learning or academic exercise - there is little point,
and there are dozens of serious drawbacks if you attempt it.
Mr. M. need to do stuff that is tested in 18 browsers, and 5 Operating systems, that has been used by 100,000 or millions of users.

But... you will have a hard time convincing the few remaining people, or companies about open source.

Ask anyone who has not yet embraced Open Source...
to answer this question:
Have you ever made MONEY using open source?

If answer is NO...
  don't waste your time trying to convince them...they live in the past..
     and you are wasting your time... but on the bright side...
         they will eventually come around... without your help or opinions...

NO single person, or single company (even Microsoft, and they admit it) - can compete with the POWER and critical mass of Open Source.

Mr. M. latest TWO applications for the Mac OS..

Both written in something called:

Objective-C - Mac ONLY
    (kinda like PHP, Javascript, but greater level of difficulty, takes years and years to learn)

JiffyKeys

The time-saving keyboard utility for all Mac users. Keep your hands on the HOME row! FREE Software

ReaderPal

JiffyKeys
and
ReaderPal...
have this in common:
  • Extensive use of Open Source Software and libraries and frameworks
With that... neither application would be possible to attain in the time frame it was
Neither application would have been of interest to Mr. M.

"The FUTURE is HERE - it just isn't well distributed  ;)"

Mr. M. says.. you CAN'T be competitive in business without open source... that is all there is to it.
College Web site, the White House in USA...
 sites are all built on Open source, and people are making very very good money using open source, while the "proprietary systems are slowly dying"

Now a days... when a MM company says "We write your applications/websites" from scratch...
they mean from scratch - starting with Open Source libraries and frame works... see Free Lance course in winder.. MM 4xxx

Our Feature Presentation - Earn marks TODAY by Learning WordPress

Please follow Mr. M. lead.

Before you leave - write the steps you did in your
What I learned Document

Installing your FIRST WordPress

  1. Make sure MAMP is working on your computer - two green lights
  2. Download WordPress v 3 from http://wordpress.org/
  3. Make a unzip it to  MAMP folder - htdocs
  4. Unizip it
  5. You now have a folder called "wordpress"
  6. Run phpMyAdmin
  7. Create a database called   datWordPressYouName
  8. go to localhost/   the MAMP folder  /wordpress
  9. Run the install
  10. PRESTO!
  11. you have a wordpress

Now

  1. Make a POST
  2. Make a PAGE
  3. View the site (Preview)
  4. Examine the .css file - locate it in Dashboard.
  5. Go to FINDER, see the structure WordPress must use
  6. phpMyAdmin-- inspect the many databases there.... wp_  tables, lots of them.

TIP OF THE DAY

How do I get back to Dashboard
http://localhost:8888/wordpress/wp-admin/

Max. Fun

  1. A student last year showed Mr. M. this theme - it changed the way Mr. M. thought of themes
  2. Last Feb,  while working in Scarborough ON, http://itworldcanada.com - Mr. M found out they knew of this and used Mystique to do highly customized sites.
  3. Install the Mystique theme - follow Mr. M. lead
  4. Change the <title> tag - with your knowledge of PHP, see Editor. Be careful though...
  5. Add a &copy; 2010  to the footer - using your knowledge of PHP
  6. Examine how POWERFUL this theme really is.

More Stuff

  1. Install, a plugin... maybe a flickr one or something, anything you want
  2. Try it out
  3. Try to think of something... anything... you will likely find a plugin that will do it very very well!
  4. Backup Plugin? Restore Plugin?
  5. Plugin that uses the best of jQuery - sure, it is all there for you, all FREE, all easy to use.

Show Mr. M. for marks - he will record

6.9/10 % towards your grade TODAY!

Question:

But  I would like more than 6.9/10...

Here's how  -

Next week have a few screen shots of MORE themes and MORE Plugins you installed on your OWN computer,
but these in your What I learned Document

Then..
MR. M. will INCREASE your mark on the same sheet.
But you MUST show him by end of next week.
