Student Check List[ ] Reviewed notes before and after lecture/lab[ ] Paid attention [ ] Spent total of 6 hours per week Attendance
Attendance/Participation - will count 20% towards your mark. Attendance taken at very beginning of class, if you are late, counts as absent. Notes on Attendance: - all students get a FREE missed class (So does Mr.M.) - perfect attendance (without free one) +2% bonus - 22/20 (if no deductions) - late is counted as not there, attendance taken at beginning of class Coming LATE is VERY disruptive, and a bad habit for any real job. - if you know you will be away for good reason, discuss/email Mr.M. in advance. Miss 0 class - 22/20 Miss 1 class - 20/20 Miss 2 Classes - 18/20 Miss 3 Classes - 15/20 Miss 4 Classes - 12/20 Miss 5 Classes - 5/20 (ie. this is TWO weeks missed) more than 5, 0/20 Good excuses include Dr. note/emergencies,. Miss a quiz, and you will lose marks, and/or risk a zero on the quiz. Important NOTES and CONDITIONS: Update: If you miss more than ONE or TWO classes, with a good excuses, some consideration may be given. However: Example. Student emailed Mr. M. 8 times with "good" excuse which include - sick - car trouble - have to work on other teachers enormous assignments (this is NOT a good reason) - slept in (again, NOT a good reason) - family issues - other serious problems likely beyond students control So, even though Mr. M. has 8 emails from the student, the student can't expect to get the same mark as a student with near perfect attendance who has worked extremely hard, and taken the course extremely seriously. Depending on circumstances and nature of "good excuses" this student may expect about 5 or 10 out of 20 Mr. M. has NO choice but to enforce this as is seems so many students don't take his course seriously. Note On Catastrophic Excuses. Prolong sickness, death in family and other terrible important and tragic events... Mr. M. will help you as much as he can, and hopefully you can pass. Consideration will be given Hopefully, the attendance mark will NOT cause the student to lose their year. Mr. M. was very ill at Queens University, and go the lowest mark possible on 2 courses, but it did NOT cost him a year of Engineering. He was always thankful for that... and never expected anything more than the LOWEST mark possible. What I did this summerGo around the room - Mr. M. to start In 5 words or LESS, what was the highlight of your summer. Mr. M. 1 finished 2 feature-length 3 screenplay 4 105 5 pages Now your turn... Remember 5 words or less. Tip of the DayBasic HTML review:OUCH - Ouch - that hurts.. What is wrong with this site... Do you recall from last year... REMEMBER - the difference between someone able to work in industry and someone who can't is the knowledge of BASICS... Don't let that happen to you... http://www.tbairport.on.ca/ Quote of the DayTim O’Reilly He enjoys repeating a quote by science-fiction writer William Gibson: “The future is here. ... It’s just not evenly distributed yet.” William Gibson Science Fiction Writer (famous). Gibson coined the term "cyberspace" in his short story "Burning Chrome" and later popularized the concept in his debut novel, Neuromancer (1984). View ONLY if you are interested Terms you gotta know

Creativity CornerOh dear, not much today ;) What would you like to see covered in this SERVER SIDE PROGRAMMING COURSE? Teaching RemarksI surely did enjoy working with all of you last year - hard to believe 12 months have past... Welcome Back! Intro to PosterousHOMEWORK.... For next week Sign up and PLAY with posterous... Demo... Look at examples too.. https://makarenko.posterous.com/ A domain name for youAll students will be given a domain name, paid for by the college, a .info And learn how to connect this to websites etc. Mr. M. to explain what a Portfolio Card is, and how we will use it in MM 325 http://zazzle.com Reference: http://5dollarcard.com Lecture Topic #0 - Real World ExamplesCompany XYZ want to have a website for posting news (like a blog) and pages. They want it to look great. The client wants to be able to CHANGE the Content but have VERY little, if any technical knowledge of xHTML, PHP, javascript. Oh no! Nothing we did in 1st year prepared you to allow a user to Change content on the web - MM 325 to the rescue. Server side programming is where you want your design skills to be - and if you are good at CSS - you got it made!! They will HIRE you as a freelancer to create this for them. KISS - is the order of the day! What do you propose? Mr. M. thinks there are only really 3 main choices in the real world. Step 1 Of course -- get a DOMAIN NAME if Company XYZ doesn't already have one. http://godaddy.com is Mr. M.'s favorite. Question: How much does a .com cost? Step 2 Choice No. 1 http://blogger.com (owned by google) (or tumblr, or Posterous, or any good cloud based solution) Choice No. 2 - WordPress sub choices a) Get a hosting account somewhere (Mr. M. likes http://hostgator.com) - You can set up a blank WordPress in about 60 seconds using cPanel and Fantastico b) Host on http://wordpress.com or http://wordpress.org Choice No. 3 - use a PHP Framework to create a custom Blog This would be last choice, not practical, Choice No. 4 - use another open course CMS - Content Manger System like http://start.websitebaker2.org/ Note that the Choice to "write a blog" from scratch is NOT on the list. To write a CMS as a practical matter, would never be done by a profitable, knowledgeable website design company, unless there was some compelling reason (Mr. M. can't think of one) - or they simple are "behind the times" - by about 8 years or so. Note that purchasing a CMS or anything Micro$oft is not an option in Mr. M.'s view. - Yet there are companies and individuals that don't see what Open Source means to the future and will spend $1,000 of such expensive proprietary closed-source options. Just two years ago, what was the "computing dept" view of Open Source Software ? like PHP.... Oh... it is good for s______ st___f Google, Youtube, facebook, twitter ? However, people have to make up their own minds about Open Source. Stop bothering me... ;) Lecture Topic #1 - What is "server side" programming? It is pretty confusing... Example.... Mr. M. to think of something -
What does the "L" word stand for?Remember - no bad language in Mr. M. classes.... Mr. M. tries NOT to use it - especially to describe any student... Who wants to bet a NICKEL Mr. M. says the FOUNDER of PHP... IS NOT L - who will bet? Mr. M. WINS if he is NOT L.... The Founder - History... Is "history" of a MM topic important to you? Rasmus Lerdorf is the initial creator of the PHP web programming language in 1993. Rasmus now works for Yahoo! and continues to lead the large open source community around the development and use of the PHP programming language. Rasmus talks about the history of PHP, some of the more recent work, and looks toward the future of PHP. More here, optionally if you are interested... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rasmus_Lerdorf What is PHP? Lecture Topic #2 - How about a GOOD book.Mr. M. has bought several, this may be a excellent FREE one.http://issuu.com/kdavies/docs/oreilly.programmingphp.partone Review in class 1- What is PHP 2- Growth of PHP 3- PHP inside a web page? Update on Growth: Movie of the Week ( 9 minutes )Not really a movie, but the most important book Mr. M. has read relating to the future of Multimedia. Note: This is required reading for MM 462 - so why not make a start on it this semester. by: Chris Anderson http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Free-Future-Radical-Price-Chris-Anderson/9781401322908-item.html?ref=Search+Books%3a+%2527free+chris+anderson%2527 Play 10 min prologue http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/17-07/mf_freer IN THE LABREMINDER: Lab time is for MM work only, Lose marks for playing games or unrelated YouTube etc. - Please ask Mr. M. if you want to do something - Yellow Card?
